PGA Tour star compelled to issue statement after quitting $4M tournament
Min Woo Lee hits an iron shot

Min Woo Lee is the latest star to withdraw from the DP World India Championship after a chaotic opening two days at Delhi Golf Club, with the Aussie citing an illness for his early exit

Min Woo Lee has withdrawn from the DP World India Championship due to a "stomach illness" and back spasms.

The popular Australian was one of the headline names in the field at Delhi Golf Club, but he had to call it quits after just five holes of his second round. Play was suspended for darkness shortly before 6:00 p.m. local time on Friday, and Lee was due to return to complete his second loop the following morning.

The PGA Tour regular was due out at 6:35 a.m., but shortly before he was due on the sixth tee, it was confirmed that the 28-year-old had pulled out. It comes after three players ended their tournament early following a brutal opening round.

Lee was one over par for the tournament, one shot within the cut line and in with a solid chance of playing the weekend, but a bout of "Delhi belly" had a knock-on effect and he was unable to tee it up.

"Sad to say I've had to withdraw from the DP World India Championship," Lee posted on Instagram. "A stomach illness triggered some tough back spasms, and I'm just not able to compete this weekend.

"Huge thanks to DP World, the tournament staff, and all the fans for the incredible hospitality and support this week. Priority now is getting back to 100 percent."

Lee was 29th in the Race to Dubai rankings heading into this week, meaning he should qualify for the DP World Tour's season-ending playoffs in Abu Dhabi and Dubai next month despite leaving India without any points.

Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters champion, also pulled out before completing his second round on Saturday.

He, too, cited illness, but at seven over par with nine holes to play, he was on course to miss the cut.

Andy Sullivan, Grant Forrest and Anthony Quayle withdrew before play began on Friday. Sullivan cited illness, while the winner of last week's Spanish Open, Forrest, and Quayle pulled out due to injury.

At the opposite end of the leaderboard, Eugenio Chacarra has continued his charge for Race to Dubai glory. After the second round, he led Scott Jamieson by one at 10 under par after firing his second consecutive five-under-par 67.

Chacarra is projected to displace Patrick Reed atop the rankings after the American made the cut on the number at even par, and he has plenty of work to do over the weekend to limit the damage.

Third-place Rory McIlroy is also in the hunt, having made the cut in India.
