Sloane Stephens is currently on track to earn a wildcard for the 2027 Australian Open.
Stephens is a two-time Grand Slam finalist, winning one of those matches to lift the trophy at the US Open in 2017. She beat fellow American Madison Keys in the final in New York. The eight-time WTA champion then reached the final of the French Open the following year, but was beaten by Simona Halep.
Having once climbed as high as world number three, Stephens has just added another piece of silverware to her honours list. She triumphed at the Edmond Open W100 in Oklahoma, which has placed her in good standing for a wildcard at next year’s Australian Open.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and Tennis Australia have a reciprocal agreement in place, whereby main draw singles wildcards for the 2027 Australian Open and US Open will be exchanged. And after week two of the five-week window that started earlier this month, Stephens has taken the lead in the standings.
Rising 15 places in the WTA rankings to 118th after winning in Edmond, the former US Open champion leads the way in the race for Melbourne. She is followed in the top five by Elvina Kalieva, Julieta Pareja, Annika Penickova and Connie Ma.
The wildcard will be awarded to the player with the most ranking points from a maximum of three events in the five-week period, which ends November 2. All indoor and outdoor tournaments at W35 level and above are included.
It is certainly far from the biggest title of Stephens’ fantastic career, but she has rightfully celebrated her latest achievement. Sharing her delight on social media, the 33-year-old posted on Instagram: “They said I needed points, so I figured I’d just take the whole lot. Edmond, OK, thanks for the hospitality and the hardware.”

Among those commenting on the post was her fellow former Grand Slam winner Bianca Andreescu. The Canadian, who won the US Open two years after Stephens, responded with trophy and smiling face emojis. Incidentally, she has just enjoyed similar success to her American rival, with Andreescu lifting the trophy at the WTA 125K Rovereto in Italy this week.
And she has also celebrated her title on Instagram, writing: “I knew I had more moments like this in me… I’m beyond humbled by this title and proud of the work and patience it took to get here.
“To my team, family, friends and everyone who’s been in my corner, a MEGA thank you. Your support and belief have carried me through A LOT, long before there was another trophy to hold. Taking a moment to really appreciate this one.
“Rovereto, you made this week even more special. Such a fascinating place, with people who made us feel welcome from start to finish. Here’s to the tournament team for putting together such a well-organised event and looking after us with so much care. I will never forget this week.”

And commenting on her post was tennis legend Chris Evert, who wrote: “Congratulations Bianca, I know you’ve worked hard for this, keep going.” Like Stephens, Andreescu has also climbed the WTA rankings following her success. She’s up 36 places to 132nd.
