Martin O’Neill watched Celtic fight back from a goal down to beat Hibs 2-1 at Easter Road, with Camilo Duran producing another moment of quality to secure all three points.

The Colombian has now scored ten goals this season, including three in his last three appearances against Benfica, Hearts and Hibs.

O’Neill was delighted with his contribution, although his reaction to Duran’s winner also showed just how highly he rates the 23-year-old.

Martin O’Neill says he almost expects Camilo Duran to score for Celtic

Speaking after the Hibs victory, O’Neill was asked about Duran’s superb finish in the 43rd minute.

“He’s brilliant! A really brilliant finish,” O’Neill told Celtic TV.

“The minute that he picks that ball up on the edge of the penalty box I almost feel as if he’s going to score a goal as well too.”

“So it was a fantastic, eventually it turned out to be the winning, goal but it was a great goal anyway.”

Duran picked up possession outside the Hibs box before curling a left-footed effort beyond goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger. It was another excellent finish from a player who has become Celtic’s biggest goal threat in recent weeks.

Yet Duran started on the right wing at Easter Road, with Kasper Hogh preferred through the middle.

That decision looks increasingly difficult to justify when Duran is producing the goods so consistently.

O’Neill’s previous Camilo Duran comments make Celtic selection intriguing

O’Neill has already spoken about where he believes Duran is most effective.

Following Celtic’s League Cup victory over Dundee United in August, the manager suggested the Colombian was better suited to a central attacking role.

“I still think the best of him is maybe centre forward or just off the centre forward,” O’Neill said.

Duran backed up that assessment with an outstanding performance through the middle in Celtic’s 7-1 win over Hearts.

Against Hibs, however, Hogh returned to centre-forward duties and missed a good opportunity in the first half.

The Dane was replaced after 64 minutes, allowing Duran to move centrally before he too was withdrawn nine minutes later.

Chris Sutton has also questioned Celtic’s decision to use Duran on the right, believing his ability is being wasted out wide. Duran has shown he can score from either position, but O’Neill faces a decision over how to get the best from his most dangerous attacker.

Hogh is getting opportunities through the middle while Duran is delivering the goals. On current form, the Colombian has every right to feel he should be Celtic’s first-choice striker.
