Luke Loucks builds a perfect all-time ACC roster

Florida State head coach Luke Loucks put his ACC basketball knowledge to the test and came away with a roster that the game itself considered unbeatable.

Loucks participated in an “82-0” style challenge in which random ACC programs are spun, and the participant must select one all-time player from each school to fill out a starting five and sixth-man spot. For the college version, the goal was to build a team capable of finishing 33-0.

Fittingly, Loucks began with Florida State.

Center: Dave Cowens, Florida State

Loucks wasted little time selecting Seminoles legend Dave Cowens, calling him a “top 50 all-time player in history” before placing him at center. Cowens gave Loucks an elite interior foundation immediately, and the frontcourt only became more imposing as the draft continued.

Small forward: Carmelo Anthony, Syracuse

When Syracuse appeared next, Loucks called the decision a “no question” and selected Carmelo Anthony at small forward. Anthony led Syracuse to the 2003 national championship during his lone college season, giving Loucks an elite scorer alongside Cowens.

Power forward: Tim Duncan, Wake Forest

Wake Forest created the first real dilemma. Loucks debated between Chris Paul and Tim Duncan before ultimately choosing Duncan. “How do you not go Tim Duncan?” Loucks asked.

With Duncan joining Cowens inside and Anthony on the wing, Loucks quickly declared that his team was going to “dominate people inside.”

Point guard: Jason Kidd, Cal

Loucks landed another Hall of Fame talent when California came up, choosing Jason Kidd over Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Kidd filled the point guard spot and gave the roster an elite distributor to organize an already loaded collection of scorers and big men.

Shooting guard: Malcolm Brogdon, Virginia

Virginia provided several possibilities before Loucks settled on Malcolm Brogdon at shooting guard. Brogdon added another versatile two-way player to a starting lineup already featuring Kidd, Anthony, Duncan and Cowens.

Sixth man: Michael Jordan, North Carolina

Then came North Carolina. With every starting position already filled, Loucks was left with perhaps the most absurd sixth man imaginable: Michael Jordan.

“Michael Jordan coming off the bench for us,” Loucks said. “That is almost a shame, but he is gonna be a heck of a bench player.” The final roster featured Jason Kidd, Malcolm Brogdon, Carmelo Anthony, Tim Duncan, and Dave Cowens, with Jordan as the sixth man.

The game agreed with Loucks’ confidence. His roster received a perfect 33-0 projection, making Loucks the first coach to participate in the challenge and successfully draft an undefeated team.

“33 and 0, let’s go,” Loucks said. “Easy.”
