A new rumor offers the New York Mets a chance at a young, high-upside starting pitcher in a rare trade with in-city rivals, the New York Yankees.
There is no other way to say it than that the 2026 season for the Mets was one of the worst they’ve had in quite some time. And that is saying something considering their devoted fanbase has seen many underwhelming years. However, there is hope for better days in 2027.
Top star Juan Soto is still in the early stages of his prime. Francisco Lindor had a strong finish to the year. But more than anything, prospects Carson Benge, AJ Ewing, and Nolan McLean showed they have the talent to be key members of a new-look core going forward for President David Stearns to build around.
The Mets will look to upgrade first, second, and third in the offseason, but improving their starting staff will be a far bigger priority. They will surely be linked to superstar free agent Tarik Skubal, but if there is a new salary cap for 2027, the two-time Cy Young may not be a realistic option. That is why Stearns will also need to be crafty and find players that make them better, but who are also cost-effective and under team control for a few years.
Interestingly enough, the Yankees are expected to make a player just like that available soon. According to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, “The Yankees are going to try like heck to trade Luis Gil.”
The Yankees have a wealth of talent in their starting rotation, and after posting a career- worst 4.61 ERA in nine appearances after dealing with shoulder inflammation, he probably isn’t in their plans to start next season. He could be moved to the bullpen, but that is a big if for the 28-year-old. Furthermore, he is out of minor league options. So they need to come up with a plan or trade him.
While Gil struggled last season in limited action and has dealt with injury woes the last two seasons, it can’t be forgotten that he was the American League Rookie of the Year just two years ago. Posting a 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts to 77 walks. He is also under arbitration control for two more seasons and is expected to make just over $2 million in 2027.
The Yankees don’t have much leverage since Gil’s value is at a low point and they don’t have a clear role for him next season. That could help the Mets in potential trade talks. So what might a deal cost the team from Queens?
The Yankees have a need at catcher after another awful season at the plate for Austin Wells. Would a swap of Gil for Francisco Alvarez interest the Yankees? The Mets may be open to finding a new platoon mate with Gold Glove finalist Luis Torrens. Brett Baty and/or Mark Vientos (along with a prospect) would also be intriguing low-cost options for the team from the Bronx at second or third. Two other positions they will need to address in the winter.
Is a trade likely? Probably not, but Stearns loves a good project. The former ROTY is an affordable option with a ton of upside that he should consider.
