Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has apologized to Valencia fans after the on-loan ace was sent off in a defeat to Villarreal this weekend.

Elliott was given his marching orders as the 90-minute mark approached for collecting two bookings in quick succession, the second of which was for dissent. Level at 1-1 before going down to 10 men, Valencia then conceded a winner deep into stoppage time via substitute Georges Mikautadze in the 96th minute.

"I would like to apologize to my teammates and the incredible Valencia CF supporters for yesterday's sending off," Elliott wrote on his Instagram story on Sunday.

"I made a mistake and I'm truly sorry. It won't happen again. Right now, I'm just focused on coming back, working even harder and helping the team get out of this situation as soon as possible.

"Thank you always for your support and support to us as players. Amunt (Go) Valencia."

While Elliott felt the need to apologize, his manager, Javier Aguirre, was left fuming over the decision to issue the red card, which he felt was harsh.

"The sending off of Harvey Elliott is absurd, ridiculous. I’ve already let him know that," Aguirre said post-match.

"It’s not his fault. It’s my fault for putting out the players I put out. I decide who and how they play. I’ll talk to him and tell him what I need to tell him."

Elliott struggled to get any game time under Unai Emery at Aston Villa last season. During the summer, he failed to impress Andoni Iraola at Liverpool sufficiently and headed out on loan again.

Now, in Spain, that does appear to be a league that should suit Elliott's skill set, though the 23-year-old has found it tough going so far.

Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.

The Spanish media was distinctly unimpressed with his showing here. Superdeporte gave Elliott a zero out of 10 rating, stating: "Learning Spanish is the least of it. What's more important is that he learns what it means to wear the Valencia CF shirt.

"He was sent off for protesting. Instead of focusing on winning the match, he started doing something inappropriate with the referee. And although it was a ridiculous sending-off that shows how thin-skinned he is about Valencia CF, the Englishman should have spared himself the trouble."

Valencia is second-bottom of the La Liga table as things stand. Only Malaga has collected fewer points to date.
