Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson has interviewed for the head coach vacancy at his alma mater, NC State, according to a report by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Wilson spent three seasons playing for the Wolfpack from 2007-10, before transferring to Wisconsin for his final season of college football. NC State fired former head coach Dave Doeren, who had been with the team since 2013, earlier this season.
Despite offers to play as a backup this season, the 37-year-old Wilson formally retired from the NFL in June and has been working as a studio analyst for CBS Sports this season.
Wilson spent the 2024 season playing for the Steelers, throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and earning his 10th and final Pro Bowl nod. Wilson spent last season with the New York Giants and started three games before an injury forced him to give way to Jaxson Dart.
Wilson spent most of his career with the Seattle Seahawks after they selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. With Seattle, Wilson won NFL Rookie of the Year, led the NFL in touchdowns and passer rating and was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, in addition to winning Super Bowl XLVIII at the end of the 2013 season.
Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos in 2022. Two years later, he was released and joined the Steelers for a one-year run as the team’s starter
Wilson is not the only former NC State and NFL quarterback involved in the derby to repalce Doeren, as former Wolfpack and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is considered the front-runner.
