What are your thoughts on that game?
I am delighted. You can pick really, really good and bad out of it can't you. After the weekend, this is a really difficult game because they are a good team, well-coached. Been at it a little now, a few of their players and together a lot longer than we have, so a fair bit of continuity, so credit to them. But this was a really awkward, dangerous game for us tonight. While it wasn't a 4-1 game on Saturday, the bottom line is the result said 4-1. When you have to come to a home game then, a couple of days later, I can't thank the lads enough tonight for their efforts and what they've done. Tonight took a lot of courage to go out there, when you have just been beaten 4-1. Until that's ever happened to you, you don't quite know how you feel about receiving every pass, competing for every ball, taking every shot, going for every header, it takes a lot of courage and I thought our boys showed a lot of courage tonight. Even more when the result got back to 3-2 because that showed immense courage. We could have easily buckled because they are in the ascendancy, the whole crowd gets nervous, the team gets nervous, everyone gets nervous. We were looking to make the change just before they got it back to 3-2. Then you want it to settle down a little bit again, then we made a change at the end, probably just to lock the game up because we have now gone Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday and now we have to make sure we rest and recover really well for the weekend.
Kirsten Otchere's first goal, a nice moment for him after you showed a bit of faith in him putting him in there tonight
Yes, he deserved that because he's done really well in training, still have to bear in mind he's still a young lad so he'll be up and down, up and down. That's his first EFL goal so the lads have given him a round of applause in there. That's really good for him and we have been delighted with him. He's a really quiet boy, Kirsten, and we are trying to bring him out of his shell a little bit. The lads like him, they are just not quite sure how to take him sometimes because he's a bit vacant and doesn't smile enough! He doesn't show you enough emotion, but I am sure there is plenty in him.
Jordan Shipley and Kirsten Otchere seemed to link up well on the left
I thought Shipley was excellent tonight and I am really pleased for him. That's more like it from him. I am pleased it happened because we've been waiting a while for it. He's probably been waiting a while as well. He was good tonight, Shippers, so I am really pleased for him. The two centre-halves alongside him were excellent. I know we've conceded two goals, but the whole back four were excellent tonight, with Freddy and Ben in front of them, I thought they were excellent. The front four, with Charlie, Kirsten, Andi and Jake pressing like they can press, it'll stick teams on the back foot and that's why we got ourselves into that 3-0 lead. The next goal was always tricky and we spoke about that at half-time. It happened on Saturday, Oldham were 3-0 up, we scored a goal and all of a sudden we needed one of those other chances to go in, they would have got really nervous. It's funny how it goes, they lost 3-0 tonight. It's a strange one. We get beat 4-1 and win 4-2 tonight. They win 4-1 and lost 3-0 tonight. A crazy league, and goes to show what a long season it is.
Three goalscorers aged 18, 19 and 20 tonight
Lovely, great. I am pleased for them. They are great lads and I enjoy working with all of them. We have a real special group of lads and when we are strong and on it, we are good.
Freddy Willcox has had a good week hasn't he
Absolutely yes, his tackle just in front of us here too. It's nice for him. He had a couple of opportunities in the first half to hit that diagonal ball I know he can hit. When he's over there away from me, I don't get to him quick enough. When he's here in front of me and I can just say to him, hit that diag, some of those passes he made out to Jake were absolutely first class.
He's coming of age a bit now isn't he as a first team player?
Not yet. We want to praise him, but he won't get there this year. It'll take a whole year. Freddy isn't going to arrive even if he plays the next 10 games. He would only have played about 20 League games. How many of those have been in midfield. It's a bit different for him isn't it. He's doing all right, more than all right and we are really pleased with and for him. You can't help but love him.
More aspects of his game are coming out but his attitude is exemplary isn't it?
I don't think that's ever been in question, that. Freddy's attitude is first-class. For a young lad, he does so much right. He isn't the quickest over the ground, Fred. But what he'll do, injuries aside, he'll go and have a long career. He'll just be a better footballer the more time goes on.
What happened with his goal?
Has it been credited to Freddy? It was 100 per cent Freddy's goal! That's the way I see it.
October and Fleetwood at home brings back memories of your first game back. You have 18 points now compared to eight at the same stage last season. How pleased are you with the progress?
It hasn't been the same this month...so much for the second year...they should have sacked me after the first year! We are 10 points better off, but we won't get head over heels with any of it. It's just another game in a long, hard season. This season is a slog. You have to try and grind as many games as you can, play as well as you can. At times tonight, some of our passing and moving was first class and a delight to watch. I just want them to do it all the time. But we are not going to do that all the time, as much as I want that. It's striving for that perfection, it's that intent from us. What is our intent? We are a team which will press, which means you'll miss it sometimes so it's risky. We run, but we run forward a lot. Our press, our intent, is the by-product of having the ball. If you are a good pressing team you'll have the ball. People will say you can't do that for 90 minutes, but you don't have to if you press right because it means you have the ball. Our intent is forward thinking, forward running. If you are ready to challenge someone, you will walk forward into the challenge and play forward. If we are going to be defensive, it means really we are going to be submissive. In some of those moments you do have to drop, be organised if you are off shape a little bit. You still to have that intent when you go and press, even if we are running back. But if we are running forward and pressing, that's far better than running back and being passive. I don't want us to run back. If we have to run back I want us to sprint back. If we run back, we still have to then get on a press and go forward, that's the intent I want us to have. Sometimes you won't always be able to do that for 90 minutes because of the amount of games, tiredness, fatigue etc. Really, I want us to go forward, be a forward-thinking team, we want to win the game and nine out of 10 you do that by going forward rather than stepping back and being passive. An aggressive team doesn't mean going around kicking everyone. You can press as hard and as high as you like going forward without having to tackle. We win a lot of balls without tacking, our front four. We'll win it further down the line, we just have to be prepared to push in and crunch the pitch up, that the ball from them doesn't become an easy ball, it becomes a long ball over the top of our defence for the goalkeeper to mop up.
Good to see Ryan Broom back tonight, how is Robbie Cundy?
I don't know. I haven't had time to speak to anyone tonight. I know Broomy was going to be available because he had his stitches out on the physio table tonight. We wanted them out before the game because he still felt it pinching. We took them out. We would have maybe thought about keeping them in, but he might be better off with them out, strapped up. He'll be fine now for the weekend. We just need to look at where are we for the weekend now and how does that look.
