FOOTBALL - Coventry City suffer defeat at bottom side Tottenham Hotspur

COVENTRY City saw their two-match winning run in the Premier League come to an end following a 3-1 defeat at bottom side Tottenham Hotspur.

Jack Rudoni drew Coventry level against Tottenham.

The Sky Blues drew level early in the second half through Jack Rudoni after James Maddison’s stunner put Spurs ahead on Coventry’s first-ever visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham’s lead before Ben Davies scored an injury-time goal to settle the game and earn Spurs a first league win of the season.

The result means Coventry sit 17th in the Premier League table, one point clear of the relegation zone after seven matches.

Frank Lampard’s side went close early on after Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Milan van Ewijk combined down the right only for Jan Paul van Hecke to make a vital block.

However, Spurs broke the deadlock on 14 minutes when former Coventry man Maddison curled a first time shot into the top-left corner from 20-yards.

The Sky Blues equalised just four minutes after half time when the ball broke kindly into the path of Rudoni in the box and the midfielder forced a shot past Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

Spurs went close soon after when a loose ball broke to Sandro Tonali in the box only for the midfielder to lash a venomous effort narrowly over the crossbar.

The home side reclaimed the lead on 58 minutes when Marmoush curled a shot beyond Carl Rushworth from the edge of the penalty area despite catching van Ewijk in the face with his elbow moments before he went for goal.

And Spurs sealed the points six minutes into injury time with Rushworth unable to keep out substitute Davies’ outside of the foot effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Coventry are next in action against Fulham on Saturday, October 24 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
