Victor Wembanyama gave the NBA world plenty to talk about during the San Antonio Spurs’ preseason finale against the Sacramento Kings on Friday. After forcing a miss on defense, the 7-foot-4 star went coast to coast, tossed the ball off the backboard, and finished with a self alley-oop dunk.
The spectacular play came during San Antonio’s 126-97 victory and quickly drew reactions across social media, including from ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.
Sacramento big man Domantas Sabonis tried to be physical with Wembanyama from the start, but the Spurs center soon gave fans something else to talk about. The highlight drew immediate attention on social media, with an NBA news and highlights account among the first to react.
Hoop Central posted the clip shortly after the play:
“Victor Wembanyama what are you on?! Block and the self lob.”
Three minutes later, the account followed up with another reaction:
“Victor Wembanyama is unbelievable.”
Polymarket Sports was similarly impressed, posting:
“Victor Wembanyama is unreal!”
The highlight even caught the attention of ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, who joined the conversation with his own reaction:
“Wemby playing a video game.”
Another fan account had a similar thought:
“That Wemby GOAT build is going to shut 2K down.”
With the Spurs preparing to face Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder in Tuesday’s regular-season opener, one fan account offered a prediction:
“I’m gonna guarantee you right now Chet ain’t gonna play opening night.”
Wembanyama has pulled off similar dunks before. In January 2024, he threw himself a lob off the backboard against Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.
He did it again in December 2024, throwing an alley-oop to himself off the backboard for a two-handed poster dunk during a 42-point performance against the Atlanta Hawks.
“That was wild,” teammate Chris Paul said afterward, according to ESPN.
Friday’s self-lob was part of a productive night in limited minutes. Wembanyama finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks in just 17 minutes, helping San Antonio build a lead that reached 37 points.
The Spurs finished their preseason at 2-3, while Sacramento went winless at 0-5. San Antonio now turns its attention to Tuesday’s regular-season opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder, a rematch of last season’s Western Conference Finals, which the Spurs won in seven games.
Wembanyama earned Western Conference Finals MVP honors after averaging 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game in that series. His performance helped San Antonio advance to the NBA Finals.
