Tributes paid to BBC Radio Merseyside sports presenter Steve Roberts

Steve was a familiar voice on BBC Radio Merseyside for more than 30 years, where he became known for hosting the rugby league programme Try Time, alongside Ray French and Allan Rooney.

His deep knowledge of the game led to his appointment as general manager at his hometown club Widnes Vikings in August 2022, a move many saw as a natural fit given his lifelong connection to the sport.

In a tribute shared on Friday, October 23, BBC Sport Merseyside said: "We have some sad news to bring you this evening – our former presenter and commentator, Steve Roberts, has passed away at the age of 75.

"For over 30 years, Steve covered many sports, including rugby league, and presented the legendary Try Time programme alongside Ray French and Allan Rooney.

"Not only was he a brilliant broadcaster and a consummate pro, he was a great friend to many

"Our thoughts and best wishes go out to Steve's family and friends."

Meanwhile, Widnes Vikings also paid tribute to Steve, describing him as a passionate and valued figure within the game.
