Significant new update regarding potential Trent Alexander-Arnold reunion at Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s time at Real Madrid isn’t going according to plan, and now a new update has emerged regarding a possible return to Liverpool in 2027.

The 28-year-old left his boyhood club for Madrid in the summer of 2025, sending a goodbye message to Reds supporters upon his exit:

“After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life. I know many of you have wondered why or been frustrated that I haven’t spoken about this yet, but it was always my intention to keep my full focus on the team’s best interests, which was securing No.20.

“This club has been my whole life – my whole world – for 20 years. From the Academy right through until now, the support and love I have felt from everyone inside and outside of the club will stay with me forever. I will forever be in debt to you all.

“But, I have never known anything else and this decision is about experiencing a new challenge, taking myself out of my comfort zone and pushing myself both professionally and personally. I’ve given my all every single day I’ve been at this club, and I hope you feel like I’ve given back to you during my time here.

“From the bottom of my heart, I thank everybody – my coaches, my managers, my teammates, the staff and our incredible supporters – for the last 20 years. I’ve been blessed enough to live out my dreams here and I will never, ever take for granted the special moments I’ve been fortunate enough to have lived through with you all. My love for this club will never die.”

Alexander-Arnold’s spell with Madrid hasn’t gone to plan, with the likes of Xabi Alonso and now Jose Mourinho all struggling to play him regularly, so he could leave the club soon.

Now, a respected source on X has claimed the right-back could head back to the Premier League on loan in January, with Liverpool still very much “in his heart”:

“Trent Alexander-Arnold to reassess his future at Real Madrid. Sources state a short-term loan move back to the Premier League in January is one option. The player will always have LFC in his heart.”

Should Liverpool fans want Trent Alexander-Arnold back?

Opinion is likely to be divided when it comes to Liverpool fans wanting Alexander-Arnold back at the club or not, with some unlikely to forgive him for leaving in the first place at the peak of his powers, when he looked set to be the Reds’ next captain after Virgil van Dijk.

There is no doubting his brilliance as a technical footballer – few full-backs in history possess more natural ability on the ball – but there is a clear risk that comes with sealing a reunion at Anfield.

Injuries have started to creep into Alexander-Arnold’s game, which isn’t ideal, and there is a reason why so many managers for club and country seem to have an issue with him. Is he as focused and driven as he once was?

At best, a loan move could be worth taking a punt on by Liverpool, but not a permanent one, with Alexander-Arnold showing signs of not being the player of old as he approaches 30.
