Caleb Williams Just Took a Record From a Name Bears Fans Know Too Well

Aaron Rodgers spent years giving Bears fans reasons to look away. Caleb Williams has given them a reason to look closely at a record Rodgers used to share.

With his interception-free performance in Monday’s 34-17 victory over Seattle, Williams extended his streak to 36 consecutive regular-season games with at least 20 pass attempts and no more than one interception.

According to the Bears’ official statistical roundup, that broke his tie with Rodgers for the longest such streak in NFL history. The conditions require a little explanation. This is not a streak of interception-free games. Williams can throw one interception and keep it going. He also has to attempt at least 20 passes.

What it measures is his ability to handle a meaningful passing workload without allowing one interception to become two.

For a young quarterback whose willingness to attempt difficult throws has always been part of the attraction, that is a significant achievement. The exciting plays draw attention. His ability to avoid repeated giveaways is becoming a strength of its own. Seattle provided a useful example of the decisions behind that record.

Williams completed 24 of 34 passes for 247 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions against a defense that entered the game allowing the fewest passing yards in the league. He helped Chicago score four touchdowns without needing to spend the night forcing throws downfield.

That approach had been part of his preparation. Before the game, Williams emphasized the patience Seattle’s defense demanded, acknowledging how difficult it could be to keep accepting modest gains throughout an entire evening. On Monday, he followed through.

The Bears opened with a 17-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Williams kept the possession moving while Chicago worked through third downs and a fourth-down conversion. The touchdown came on a one-yard throw to Luther Burden III.

It was a long way to travel for a short scoring pass. Against Seattle, that was an answer worth accepting.

The record gives that performance a broader context. Williams’ restraint was not something that appeared for one particularly demanding opponent. Across 36 consecutive appearances, he has avoided the multiple-interception games that can quickly turn an offense’s difficult afternoon into a team-wide problem.

That does not mean every decision during the streak was correct. Interception totals cannot account for every dangerous throw, missed opportunity or mistake a defender failed to punish. Nor do they capture sacks, fumbles or the consequences of holding the ball too long.

The achievement still matters. Williams has maintained the streak while being asked to run an offense, attempt difficult passes and produce enough points to win. Ben Johnson’s Seattle game plan added another layer to those responsibilities.

“This was one of the more elaborate game plans in terms of what we were asking him to do,” Johnson said afterward.

Williams had to recognize defensive looks, communicate adjustments and help put Chicago into suitable plays inside a loud stadium. Johnson’s confidence in giving him that responsibility is another encouraging part of his development.

The evening included mistakes. A fourth-quarter delay-of-game penalty pushed Chicago backward during an important possession. Williams also identified throws he could have executed better.

But the Bears answered when Seattle closed to 20-17, driving for a touchdown that restored their two-score advantage. Williams finished the night without giving the Seahawks an interception to help their comeback. That is the practical value behind the historical comparison. A quarterback who can produce while limiting damaging mistakes gives his team more chances to finish the job.

Rodgers’ name makes this particular milestone especially satisfying in Chicago. The longer-term significance belongs to Williams.

He is showing that an offense can ask him to be creative, productive and responsible with the football at the same time. Thirty-six games into this streak, that combination is becoming increasingly difficult to dismiss.
