It was a tough week for Denver Broncos defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike.
First, Uwazurike was fined $6,361 by the NFL for a facemask penalty against the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he was placed on short-term injured reserve by the Broncos on Saturday afternoon.
Uwazurike will now have to sit out at least the next four games before being eligible to return against the New York Jets in Week 14. The 28-year-old defensive lineman totaled 17 tackles and one sack through the first eight games of the season before injuring his shoulder. To fill his former spot on the 53-man roster, Denver promoted cornerback Sean Fresch from the practice squad to the active roster.
Uwazurike is the latest Broncos player to be fined this season. Denver linebacker Alex Singleton has been fined four times earlier this season — for a late hit in Week 1, for a hit on a defenseless receiver in Week 2, for an impermissible use of the helmet in Week 6 and for unnecessary roughness in Week 7. His Week 2 fine was rescinded after an appeal.
Earlier this season, Denver safety Brandon Jones was fined in Week 7 and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and guard Quinn Meinerz were fined for a celebration in Week 3, but those fines were rescinded after appeals. Meinerz was also fined for posting a photo of his drug test notification on social media after Week 3. After that, fellow guard Ben Powers was fined $17,911 for a blindside block in Week 4.
The NFL's website says the league donates fines "to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels, including youth football and the communities that support the game."
