The 2026 Ballon d'Or winner will be announced on Monday, with Harry Kane, Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe the current frontrunners. All three have enjoyed exceptional years, though 30 players are nominated in total. International performances are also accounted for, ensuring that the World Cup is properly acknowledged, with Yamal and Spain beating Lionel Messi's Argentina in this summer's final. Though Kane did fire England to the semis and his 73 goals for club and country spearheaded Bayern Munich's charge to the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe did not pick up any team honours at the end of the campaign, but also reached the World Cup semi-finals with France and took home the tournament's Golden Boot. He became the competition's all-time top scorer in the process and scored 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid across all competitions in 2025/26.
Team success has been a dominating factor in recent Ballon d'Or winners and Spain have several of their World Cup winners hoping to spring a surprise too.
Kane admitted that he is "trying not to think about" the accolade as he focuses on Bayern, but he will undoubtedly be excited at the prospect of becoming the first English winner in 25 years.
"I try not to think about it," Kane said after drawing 2-2 with Arsenal on Wednesday. "Obviously it is hard not to. There are always rumours and stuff flying around so you try to stay away from it. I think my wife would prefer to know, and my family."
But the Three Lions captain is being backed by many big names from within the sport, with Gary Lineker saying: "What Harry Kane has done is truly incredible. I would love to see him win it. It would be very well deserved and it is either going to be him or Lamine Yamal."
