NFL officials endured another difficult moment on Sunday when a referee incorrectly announced the outcome of a video review, triggering premature celebrations before reversing the call moments later.
During Week 6's Sunday Night Football clash between the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field, officials found themselves at the center of yet another controversy. The game capped off a turbulent Sunday that saw referees criticized for "soft" penalties and a player ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Late in the second half, Cowboys defensive back Daron Bland appeared to intercept a Jordan Love pass, stepping out of bounds with the ball. However, the play was initially ruled incomplete due to lack of control before going out of bounds. It comes as Jim Nantz suffers 'injury' at hands of Tony Romo replacement live on CBS.
Following a review, replays indicated Bland had bobbled the ball and failed to establish possession with both feet inbounds. Despite this, the official mistakenly announced the ruling had been overturned to an interception, prompting Bland and his teammates to erupt in celebration.
The excitement proved fleeting, as the official quickly returned to the microphone to correct the mistake, leaving Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer visibly furious with the officiating crew.
The blunder left officials red-faced and provided fans with additional ammunition in their ongoing criticism of the NFL's officiating standards. "Refs called it incomplete called it an interception then called it incomplete again f------ nfl is a joke," one social media user wrote in response to the sequence.
"Refs during this Cowboys-Packers game. It's an incomplete pass. 2 seconds later: It's an interception. 3 seconds later: It's an incomplete pass. Officiating has been a mess lately," another wrote.
The contentious officiating didn't stop there on Sunday night. Packers receiver Matthew Golden received a debatable unsportsmanlike conduct penalty early in the contest for taunting, apparently awarded for flexing his muscles at a Cowboys defender following a reception.
"The NFL is so soft nowadays it's pathetic!" one user tweeted. "These taunting calls are getting out of hand. I miss the days when guys could celebrate when they made a good play!"
Sunday's controversies extended beyond that game, spilling over into the Buffalo Bills' victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, where Bills cornerback C. J.
Gardner-Johnson was ejected after spitting at an opponent directly in front of a referee.
