Bath Rugby injury latest as Johann van Graan concerned for Santi Carreras

Johann van Graan was left fearing the worst as Bath Rugby full-back Sanit Carreras was carried off the field in Friday night’s 23-5 defeat to Gloucester, with the Argentina international unable to put weight on his knee.

Carreras, returning to his old stomping ground at Kingsholm, was replaced in the 12th minute after he went down away from contact as he looked to step off his right leg.

The Bath head of rugby confirmed post-match that his medical staff feared the 28-year-old had suffered an ACL injury, which would likely spell the end of his season.

Speaking at Kingsholm, van Graan said: “He’s obviously got to go for a scan.

“I’m not a medical expert, but I’d be amazed if that wasn’t really bad news. It’s gutting for him, and we hope for a bit of grace, but we’ll see what the scan says.

“It’s his knee. I’ve been in the game for a long time and a non-contact injury, when a player goes down like that; but lets see what the scan says.”

The injury comes as Bath’s resources in the back three are currently being tested, with Henry Arundell out with a back complaint, Tom de Glanville sidelined with an Achilles problem, and Will Muir still not fully recovered from shoulder surgery.

On Friday, in Bath’s third straight defeat on the bounce, van Graan continued his policy of rotation and handed Tyler Offiah and Louie Hennessey their first starts of the season on the wings, with the Wales international making his return from shoulder surgery; earlier this season, he handed academy product Charlie Griffin his first start.

Neither Offiah nor Hennessey did themselves any harm on Friday, but they were largely starved of the ball as Bath returned to their forward-dominated game, breaching the tryline five times, but only seeing one score stand after being held up and having a pair of tries disallowed for knock-ons and double movements.

Bath also lost flanker Guy Pepper to an ankle injury late in the game, with the 23-year-old going into camp with England this weekend to begin his rehabilitation, a potentially positive sign. He too was set to undergo a scan of the injury, van Graan confirmed.
