The Indianapolis Colts no longer have a general manager. On Monday, they fired general manager Chris Ballard after 10 seasons in charge. The final straw came on Sunday when Indianapolis lost to the Tennessee Titans, who were previously winless.
Indianapolis is now 2-4 on the season. Their hopes of making the playoffs aren’t exactly dashed. But it’s clear ownership does not have confidence in the current direction of the franchise.
Who replaces Ballard as the next decision-maker for the Colts still remains to be seen. However, there is one Pro Football Hall of Famer with historic ties to the franchise who has been endorsed for the job by one former NFL quarterback.
Former NFL quarterback turned analyst Robert Griffin III took to social media on Monday with one goal in mind.
He highlighted a legendary former player for the Colts’ general manager opening and wanted to get this out to the public. The person in question is very familiar to Indianapolis fans.
“The Indianapolis Colts should hire Peyton Manning as their new GM,” Griffin said on social media.
Manning’s proximity to the opening in Indianapolis is not entirely unfounded. On Monday, NFL analyst Dan Patrick shared information from his sources indicating the team could call the Pro Football Hall of Famer about the job. Patrick also endorsed the idea on his show.
“So now you have an opportunity to put Peyton back in Indy as a G.M. and part owner. And he gets to pick his quarterback. So now all of a sudden, the community is going to love this. The league would love this. Would Peyton love this?” Patrick said.
It’s hard not to imagine the possibility, especially considering the franchise’s history. The Colts fired Frank Reich as head coach in 2022.
In turn, they infamously named former Indianapolis offensive lineman Jeff Saturday as the interim head coach.
Saturday was hired with no coaching experience beyond the high school level at the time. A similar trend would be true for Manning. He has no experience in an NFL front office to this point in time.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer has become a standout media personality following the end of his playing career. He co-hosts The Manningcast on ESPN with his brother, Eli Manning. This is an alternate broadcast of ESPN’s Monday Night Football and has been on the air for six seasons.
The Colts drafted Manning with the first overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. Manning’s rookie campaign was chaotic. He threw 11 interceptions in his first four games and finished the year with more interceptions (28) than touchdown passes (26).
Eventually, he became one of the best quarterbacks in the league. As time went on, he established himself as a legend under center. He finished his career with two Super Bowl championships and five NFL MVPs.
However, only one Super Bowl came with the Colts. He was released by Indianapolis before the 2012 NFL season after a concerning neck injury. Manning signed with the Denver Broncos, where he won his final Super Bowl and another MVP in his four seasons with Denver.
