Tottenham Hotspur have started to look upwards in the Premier League table following back-to-back victories.
Spurs have looked a strong unit since the Premier League resumed after the extended September international break. They got a credible point against Manchester United at Old Trafford and followed it up by beating an in-form Coventry City side 3-1 at home. And the best result of the season came on Saturday when Roberto De Zerbi’s side stunned Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
It was only the second time Tottenham managed to register three points at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era, thanks to an own goal from goalkeeper Mike Penders and a fine strike from Mathys Tel.
Tel was handed a start in the high-voltage London derby, and he repaid Roberto De Zerbi’s faith. Deployed on the left wing in a 4-2-3-1 formation, the France Under-21 international worked extremely hard and showed his quality in the final third when it mattered the most.
He caused Chelsea’s defence problems with his pace, directness, movement and flair, whilst coming up with the game-defining moment in the 87th minute. The 21-year-old embarked on a mazy run and dribble, slicing through Chelsea’s midfield before rifling his shot past Penders to seal a memorable deal for Tottenham.
Following his fantastic display against the Blues, Tel was included in Troy Deeney’s BBC Team of the Week. Speaking about the Spurs attacker, Deeney wrote in his BBC Sports column:
“Tel had a real difficult start to his career at Spurs.
“I thought for the first time against Chelsea we saw what Spurs saw in him: pace, power, hard work, and then obviously an unbelievable goal to finish it as well.”
Deeney’s inclusion of Tel in his Team of the Week is backed by his numbers against Chelsea. The Sarcelles native expressed his “special feeling” after scoring a goal and helping his team win the bragging rights in West London.
The youngster has not enjoyed the best of starts to the 2026/27 season, and he was criticised by De Zerbi after Tottenham’s 0-0 draw with Everton in September. With Savio out for a few weeks with a muscle problem, and Omar Marmoush preferred centrally, Tel has a fantastic chance to cement his place on the left wing.
The goal and overall performance at Stamford Bridge should give the Frenchman a lot of confidence heading into the Crystal Palace game.
