Sri Lanka pulled off one of the most improbable run chases in ODI history in Rawalpindi as they beat Harry Brook’s record-breaking double ton. Brook hit England’s first-ever double hundred in an ODI from just 114 balls as England posted 429/7. However, Sri Lanka recovered from 24 for 2 to chase down the huge target of 430 with one ball remaining to register the second-highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.
Pavan Rathnayake led the chase with a brilliant 130, while Avishka Fernando and Dasun Shanaka made 97 each. Janith Liyanage then finished things off in sensational style, scoring 61 not out from just 27 balls. His late assault helped Sri Lanka reach their target after England looked to have regained control of the match.
Liyanage walked out to the crease with Sri Lanka needing 107 runs from 58 balls. Liyanage hit seven fours and three sixes, including a sensational 4, 4, 6 against Sam Curran. England had a chance in the final over. Josh Tongue sent Dunith Wellalage packing and then Eshan Malinga off consecutive balls, leaving Sri Lanka needing six runs from two. Liyanage returned to the crease, and Fernando hit Tongue over long off to seal a historic win.
Sri Lanka’s successful chase of 430 now goes into the record books as one of the highest successful run chases in ODI history. The match also became only the third time where a team chased more than 400.
Kusal Mendis’ decision to bowl first had appeared to backfire as Harry Brook took full advantage of the conditions and England’s batting strength. Brook blasted a superb 200 off just 114 balls, beating Shubman Gill’s record for the fastest ODI double century.
Sri Lanka’s chase of 430 is the second highest successful run chase in men’s ODI history, second only to the famous 435-run chase by South Africa against Australia in 2006. Below is the table depicting all the historic results.
