Wolves 1-0 Watford: Adam Armstrong steers Wanderers to victory

Adam Armstrong ended his goal drought with a milestone strike to give dominant Wolves a 1-0 win against Watford in the Sky Bet Championship at Molineux.

The 29-year-old striker, returning after a back injury, scored only his second league goal of the season, while it was his first Championship goal for Wolves at Molineux, all on his 450th EFL appearance.

Wolves returned to winning ways at home after one point out of six in front of their fans, but failed to turn their overwhelming superiority into goals.

And the unease around Molineux was shown when the 78th-minute double substitution of Tommy Doyle and Tawanda Chirewa for Jordan James and Armstrong was met with chants of 'You don't know what you're doing' aimed at head coach Cesar Peixoto.

Defeat for Watford - one of only two Championship teams without an away win this season - left them with one point out of 18 on their travels. They have lost seven of their last nine games, conceding 17 goals, and they forced just one save out of Jose Sa.

Wolves started purposefully and dominated the first half, barely allowing Watford over the halfway line and winning eight corners.

Rafiki Said had the first opening but curled a first-time effort well over the bar from 25 yards.

Team-mate James was much closer with a swerving effort that just cleared the angle from 20 yards.

Said then forced the first save from goalkeeper Feredico Ravaglia with a header that was pushed away after Kieran Trippier crossed.

Marshall Munetsi missed a glaring opening when he slid in only to divert Said's inviting cross wide.

Andre's shot on the turn then hit Krepin Diatta as Wolves maintained their hold on the game, before Hugo Bueno curled a 20-yard free-kick over the bar.

Wolves' pressure finally told in the 35th minute when they took a deserved lead. Trippier volleyed a cross from the right, Armstrong's first effort hit the near post but the striker forced home the rebound from a tight angle.

Watford forced the first chance of the second half, but it was close to being an own goal as Hector Kyprianou's stooping header forced Ravaglia into a diving save from Trippier's cross.

The visitors finally forced an effort on goal in the 54th minute when Edo Kayembe's speculative effort from 35 yards was scrambled behind by Sa.

Andre threatened to burst the net with a thunderous 30-yard rising drive, but the ball flew over the bar.

Wolves went on the attack again and after Doyle's shot was deflected wide, a towering header from Ladislav Krejci was tipped away by Ravaglia.

It was almost 2-0 when a Wolves corner hit Mattie Pollock and was scrambled off the line by Jordan Zemura.

The managers

Wolves head coach Cesar Peixoto:

"If we continue to win and continue to score then things are going to change, for sure.

"I took Jordan off because Marshall Munetsi is important for us at set-pieces and is stronger in those moments.

"I understand the people and they have the freedom to do what they think, but if we had scored two or three goals, it would have been totally different.

"We would have been talking about a different environment in the stadium.

"We are going to work hard so our supporters are happy with us.

"I understand the supporters. We are going to work hard to make them happy with our play, with our results. It is our task in the club.

"I want to get the supporters behind us again. It is important for us.

"We can play better, it is true. For now, for sure, the team is going to improve in the next weeks."

Watford head coach Alessio Dionisi:

"I didn't think we deserved anything in the first half because we lacked courage on the ball.

"We lost the second pass which made it difficult because the opponent is a big team who played in the Premier League last season.

"There's a difference between us and them but the second half was different and we played with courage.

"I liked the second half from my team. But if you play without courage it's impossible to create good situations if the other team plays better. The intensity and mentality from us in the second half was better."
