England Wheelchair top group with Ireland win to book Australia semi-final

England Wheelchair are gearing up for a World Cup semi-final showdown with hosts Australia after ending the group stage with a perfect record.

The defending champions were given a scare by Ireland before running out 68-32 winners to finish top of Group A.

Tom Coyd expects his team to be better for the experience as they turn their attention to completing the job in the knockouts.

"That's what we came here to do and what we live for," said the England coach.

"The fact that we've been put under a serious amount of pressure excites me because it hardens us for the next battle.

"There's no doubt we'll be better prepared for the semi-final because of the test we've been put through. Bring it on."

England remain on a collision course with France – the side they defeated to win the trophy on home soil four years ago – after their rivals saw off Australia 69-34 to secure first place in Group B and book a last-four meeting with the Irish.

Fresh from back-to-back wins, Ireland showed how far they have come since losing all three group games in 2022 to race into a 14-0 lead against England in Wollongong on Friday.

When Oran Lewis swiftly responded to Lewis King's try, the Irish led 20-4 and must have been sensing a landmark victory.

But England demonstrated their champion qualities to wrest the initiative before half-time thanks to tries from Joe Coyd, King and Rob Hawkins.

The holders did not look back as they turned a tense situation at 22-20 into a comprehensive win.

Halifax star Hawkins scored twice after the break to complete his hat-trick, while London Roosters' Coyd finished with four.

Mason Billington crossed for a brace and there were tries for brothers Jack Brown and Joe Calcott at opposite ends of the court in the closing stages.

Calcott's try took his tally for the tournament to 14, earning praise from his sibling and rival for the day.

"I'm extremely proud of Joe," said Brown.

"I love his dedication to this Ireland set-up as well. It brings me a lot of joy seeing him happy with his team-mates playing how he is.

"We made it a real family affair. It warms the heart."
