Altrincham 2-4 Carlisle United: Blues surge to latest win

The Blues chalked up a fourth straight away win for the first time in 32 years - as teenager Jonah Lowes rounded off the scoring with his first professional goal.

Callum Whelan, Callum Camps and Micah Obiero were also on target as Rob Elliot's side made it six wins from seven to move up to eighth in the National League.

The dramatic showing unfolded in front of a 1,000-strong travelling support as Carlisle recovered from going behind early on to get the better of Neil Gibson's side.

Lucas Weaver pounced on a Brad Nicholson error to shoot the hosts in front - but a fine Whelan finish brought Carlisle level just before half-time.

New signing Camps, on his first start, then superbly volleyed Carlisle ahead after the break only for Weaver to equalise for Altrincham.

Sub Obiero, though, went through to make it 3-2 - before Lowes, also on from the bench after being recalled from his Darlington loan the day before, finished off a last-gasp counter-attack.

It rounded off a memorable week for the Cumbrians and delivered a third straight win as Elliot's side continued their climb up the National League table, the Blues now two points outside the play-off places.

After the news that the appeals against Miguel Azeez and Harvey Bunker's red cards had been rejected, the duo started three-game bans here and Rob Elliot's XI at Altrincham featured three changes.

Camps was handed a first start and Teddy Jenks also came into the midfield, while Regan Linney was recalled at Obiero's expense to face his former club.

Fit-again Elliot Embleton was on the bench, as was Lowes after his loan recall.

Hosts Altrincham also made three changes, with Kian Breckin, Reuben Lopata-White and Lewis Banks replacing Otis Khan, Matthew Kosylo and Charlie Kirk - while the hosts, also depleted by injuries, named two goalkeepers on the bench along with ex-Carlisle striker Kristian Dennis.

United forced an early opening with Linney having a shot blocked, before Whelan hit the wall from a free-kick.

Carlisle, though, then found themselves behind after just five minutes, as the Blues gave the ball away in their own territory through Nichlolson's error, and Weaver cut in from the right to fire low across Adam Desbois.

From there, United struggled to create and had more defending to do when Weaver got the better of the Blues down the left before finding Tom Crawford, whose shot was blocked by Morgan Feeney.

Later, Sam Taylor hit the wall with an Altrincham free-kick, with an off-target Linney effort on 20 minutes a rare Carlisle opening by that stage.

United, though, built some better pressure later in the half and eventually it told.

After Linney had narrowly failed to pick out David Ajiboye in the box, and Josh Williams then shot narrowly wide, Carlisle found a way through in the 45th minute.

Linney fed Ajiboye on the left, he cut in and as the ball was sent across the box, Whelan arrived and, though the ball was not cleanly into his stride, he managed to beat Isted with an impressive low finish.

That saw things level at the break, with Elliot sending on Stephen Wearne for Jenks at the start of the second half.

Carlisle got back to block a Crawford shot soon after the break, with Breckin slipping when attacking the United box soon afterwards.

Linney then came close when an Ajiboye cross after a short corner was cleared into his path, but his powerful volley was met by a superb save from Isted.

And the Altrincham keeper denied United's top scorer a minute later, Linney going clean through after linking with Ajiboye but the Altrincham keeper again thwarting him.

Further Blues pressure saw Kenton Richardson denied at close range, before Wearne sent Ajiboye through to the right only for Isted to save again.

The home keeper was single-handedly keeping things level as he denied Linney again.

But he had no answer to Camps' brilliant volley in the 61st minute as a Whelan corner was cleared outside the box - and the new signing returned it with interest, his shot crashing past Isted in front of the travelling fans.

Elliot then sent on Lowes for Whelan, as Altrincham looked for a way back, Weaver forcing a save from Desbois after Leo Duru's attempt to dribble out of danger had been intercepted.

Embleton was then introduced for his first outing of the season, but soon afterwards Carlisle were pegged back, the Blues unable to prevent Weaver being fed to the right of goal and the Altrincham frontman rifling across goal and into the bottom corner.

The scorer and Desbois were both booked in the aftermath, with respective bosses Elliot and Gibson also yellow-carded after exchanges on the touchline.

Carlisle though they had gone back ahead 12 minutes from time when Feeney forced home an Embleton free-kick, but it was chalked off for a foul.

Elliot, though, then sent on Ryan Galvin and Obiero - and the latter made his mark in superb style just two minutes later.

Nicholson sent the ball down the left and Obiero latched onto it before turning sharply inside to leave a defender on the floor before burying a composed finish.

Carlisle then had six added minutes to see out as Altrincham looked for a way back, with Galvin and Linney unable to increase United's lead on the break.

But the Blues then did land one final blow - and it was a memorable moment for teenager Lowes.

With home keeper Isted up for a last-gasp Altrincham corner, United cleared their lines and Galvin carried the ball up the pitch. Isted and defenders raced desperately back but Lowes was up in support and as Galvin found him.

The midfielder finished neatly before heading to the jubilant away end, fan mobbing the academy product after he rounded off a superbly spirited Carlisle win.
