Alison Mason and Dorothy Lloyd Hughes beat Ali Ord and Sarah Wetherell by 10 points to win Canterbury GC’s Daily Mail Foursomes club round

Alison Mason and Dorothy Lloyd Hughes got up-and-down six times for pars to total 43 points and win Canterbury GC’s club round of the Daily Mail Foursomes by 10 points on Saturday.

The competition is regarded as the greatest amateur golfing event in the world, with more than 190,000 men and women competing in club qualifying rounds across England, Scotland and Wales until the end of January, after which the draw is made for the regional ties.

Mason and Lloyd Hughes will need to win eight more rounds to emulate the 2022 run of second-placed Ali Ord and Sarah Wetherell and go through to the grand finals stages in Spain in November 2027.

They made four pars, three bogeys and two doubles for an outward 22 points and came back with 21 from two pars, five bogeys and two doubles.

Ord and Wetherell had won the club round three times in the previous four years and made eight pars, six bogeys and two doubles, but failed to score on two holes for 15 out and 18 back.

They were second on countback from a field of eight pairs from Val Binns and Jacqui Mount, who birdied the fifth in a front-nine 18 points and had 15 on their inward nine.

Mason said: “We were shocked when the results came in. When it was second and third with 33, we were looking at each other and thinking: ‘Wow! We’ve, obviously, won’. We couldn’t believe it.

“Dorothy drove on the first and I hit a 3 wood, Dorothy’s next shot went a bit right and I chipped it on to two foot from the hole and, on two, Dorothy chipped on and I holed from 12 feet.

“The sixth was really good. I drove and went a bit right, Dorothy hit a really nice shot up to the top and I chipped down to three foot from the hole.

“On the ninth, Dorothy drove quite short, I hit a good 3 wood but left, she hit to just off the green, I chipped on to four feet and she made a really nice putt.”

Lloyd Hughes said: “The 17th was a highlight.

“I hit a nice driver off the tee, Alison chipped a little short but it was the putt there that was a good feeling.

“I had to spend a long time lining up because I was being absolutely pestered by a wasp! It was so irritating that a couple of times I just came away from the ball.

“The putt was from about eight feet above the hole and it just petered in and then we finished nicely on the 18th where I chipped on and Alison holed a putt from six feet.”

Canterbury GC won the end-of-season Junior East Kent League Jamboree team competition for the first time with 174 Stableford points on Saturday.

Canterbury hosted the event because they won the league in 2025 and, with five scores out of six to count, they won by six points from second-placed Faversham with juniors also making up teams from Ashford, Bearsted, Boughton, Chestfield, Etchinghill, North Foreland, Rochester & Cobham, Sene Valley and Upchurch.

Canterbury GC’s third-placed Harry Andrews failed to score on the 10th in an otherwise four birdie, level-par round for 40 points, to miss out on top spot in the individual scores.

He finished two behind Jacob Bull (Chestfield GC), who scored two-over-par on his front nine for 23 points and made four bogeys, four closing pars and one no-score for 15 back.

Faversham GC’s Sing Yan-Liu scored eight pars, eight bogeys, one double and a birdie at the 18th hole for 41 as individual second best.

Canterbury took main honours for the day thanks to Andrews, Sanjana Gullipalli, who took seventh with 35 points, Ben Holcroft, who was ninth on 34, Louis Garvey, 10th on 34, Callum Ferrett, 22nd with 31, and Georgina Carlotti, 34th with 27.

Canterbury Juniors’ organiser Elizabeth Carlotti said: “We were second in the league and won the Jamboree, I can’t remember us winning it before.

“It was a team effort and we absolutely smashed it, I’m very proud.”

Alan Hunt won only the second competition he had played at Canterbury GC when he totalled 38 points from totals of 95, net 69, in the men’s Midweek Stableford competition.

Hunt birdied the eighth for four points and was out-and-back in 12-over-par for 19 points on each nine.

Gary Fitchett scored five pars, nine bogeys, two doubles and no returns on the seventh and 18th for 17 out, 18 back and second place on countback from Simon Walsh and Andy Brockman.

Walsh reached the turn with 19 points and dropped 11 shots on his return nine for 16.

Brockman birdied the eighth, after failing to score on the fifth, and had three pars and four bogeys for 20 on his front nine but was 10-over on his back nine for 15 and fourth from a field of 65.

Jacqui Mount scored 21 points on the front nine as the foundation for her second victory in five days at the Women’s October Stableford competition.

She won for the fifth time this year when she birdied the eighth, with four pars and four bogeys for an outward three-over-par 39 and had 17 coming back.

She failed to score on the 11th when she was put off by laughing crows for totals of 82, net 69.

Alison Mason scored 89, net 72, for 35 points and second. Sarah Wetherell made 17 out and back for third position overall in a field of 21.

Mount said: “On the 11th, I was distracted by crows that appeared to be laughing at me and chunked my drive straight into the rubbish. They laughed prematurely but they were right.

“They, obviously, foresaw what was going to happen!”

Paul Wookey scored 35 points from 91, net 72, to win the Club Midweek Stableford competition on countback from playing partner Hugh Greenwood.

Wookey was out with 18 points and back with 17 while Greenwood birdied the third in a two-over-par front nine for 24 points but failed to score on three successive holes for 11 on the back nine.

John Kirby triple-bogeyed the first hole and scored 86, net 74, for 34 points and third place from a field of nine.

Be Haratbar scored two-over-par 38 on the front nine for 25 points and came back with 18 to win Monday’s Seniors’ Stableford competition overall by three.

He birdied the second with five pars and three bogeys and dropped 11 shots on his return nine for totals of 82, net 64.

Pip Tyler birdied the eighth and 13th and failed to score on the 15th for 40 points and second from a field of 68.

Philip Fagg scored 90, net 69, for 17 points out and 21 back for third place on countback from Steve Girdwood, who had two birdies in an outward 20 points and a further birdie for 18 back and totals of 75, net 69.
