Andoni Iraola says he doesn't expect to see Jeremie Frimpong back in action until the November international break.

But the Liverpool boss sounded a more optimistic note on Dominik Szoboszlai after both players were injured in Saturday's 2-1 win at Brentford.

Szoboszlai missed the visit from Manchester City earlier this month with a hamstring injury but was restored to the side at the weekend as the Reds travelled to the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Hungary captain was forced off in the first half, however, after a recurrence of the issue but Iraola has now confirmed it isn't expected to be a lengthy lay-off for Szoboszlai.

Frimpong's afternoon lasted just six minutes in west London when he suffered a muscle injury early into the second half after being brought on after the break and Iraola admits the Netherlands international is unlikely to make his comeback before the November international period.

"I think there are different circumstances and Jeremie Frimpong, I think, is a new, massive injury and it happened in the second or third minute he was playing and it was difficult to predict," Iraola said.

"We will have to wait until he recovers but I think it is going to be difficult [to return] before the international break. We will try but it is going to be difficult to have him.

"Dom Szobsozlai is different, it's not a new injury. I think he is in the same place he was probably the past week. It hasn't worsened the injury but we probably have to be a little bit more patient until he recovers fully.

"But it is not like something where he has to wait a lot of time to come back. He is more or less in the same situation he was in the past week.

"But we need more patience with him and I appreciate the effort me made the other day to be available, to want to contribute in a very difficult game that you know is going to be very physical.

"Brentford are one of the most physical teams, so for him to put himself in the front and want to play speaks very well about him, yes."

Liverpool return to action on Tuesday night when they host La Liga side Villarreal in the group stage of the Champions League.

Iraola is yet to win a Premier League game at Anfield but believes a European night at home should give his side a significant boost against the Spanish outfit, who are coached by his close friend, Inigo Perez, who he tried to bring with him to England when he was appointed Bournemouth boss in 2023.

Iraola added: "No, it is true that we have had different results away from home than at home but this is just the beginning.

"We've had some very good games as well, Atletico Madrid was a very good game, Spurs at home was a very good game and today we are playing in a different competition, it is the Champions League again.

"I always prefer, if you ask me, I prefer to play at home 100%. But it is true that there are demands for other games and we take it all one by one. For me, it is Villarreal, that is it.

"We prepare and focus on that one and I know them very well. So we need to play a game against Atletico Madrid again if we want to win."
