The Oklahoma Sooners' defense could be getting a big boost on Saturday. Oklahoma is coming off its worst performance defensively since joining the SEC, allowing 42 points and 521 yards against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
According to the latest availability report, star cornerback Eli Bowen will return after a long absence. Bowen was injured during practice the week of the Red River Rivalry. He hasn't played since that injury, meaning he's missed four straight games. Bowen has totaled 12 tackles and two pass deflections, while rarely being targeted.
In his absence, Trystan Haynes has moved into a starting role. He's done well, totaling 25 tackles and one pass deflection, while often being targeted. Having Bowen back will allow Haynes to go back to his reserve role, giving the Sooners some much-needed depth at cornerback.
Bowen's return comes at an important time for an Oklahoma defense looking to bounce back. Florida will present another challenge, and having an experienced cornerback available should give the Sooners more flexibility in matching up against the Gators' receivers. His ability to limit outside opportunities could also ease pressure on the rest of the secondary.
Just as importantly, Haynes can return to a depth role rather than carrying the responsibility of a starter. With the defense needing a response after last week's performance, getting Bowen back gives Oklahoma another option as it tries to tighten up its coverage and regain its confidence. The Sooners will need that added depth if they hope to make a statement in Gainesville.
