Landon Donovan has been called out by former USA teammate Eddie Johnson for recent comments he made about Cavan Sullivan.

Sullivan has a big future ahead of him. The 17-year-old has already established himself as a regular for Major League Soccer side Philadelpha Union, while he's also broken through on the international stage.

The youngster, regarded as one of the best young players in world football, played against Peru, Chile and Mexico in the most recent international break, scoring his first goal for his country against El Tri.

Sullivan has had a brilliant start to his football career and there are many who think he can go on to become one of the United States' greatest ever footballers.

Donovan is keen to not put too much pressure on the promising attacker, though. Speaking on his podcast, Unfiltered Soccer, the 44-year-old named four USA players that were tipped to become superstars but couldn't fulfill their lofty potential.

"I am measured and calm because I, unlike a lot of new soccer fans, have seen this story happen over and over.

“I saw it with Freddy Adu. I saw it with a guy you won’t even remember, Santino Quaranta. I saw it with Eddie Johnson. I saw it with Gio [Reyna] and seen how it’s progressed. There will be the next superstar at some point. It might be Cavan. I’m hoping it’s Cavan, or maybe it’s Julian Hall.”

Johnson, who lined up alongside Donovan on 33 occasions at international level, saw his former teammate's comments and has now called him out in a furious social media post.

He said on Instagram: "I can’t speak for Freddy Adu or Santino Quaranta or Giovani Reyna, but I will speak for myself, Landon Timothy Donovan. You talk so much s*** about every other young upcoming player in the past but yourself.

"Why don’t we talk about the 5 years you were in Germany and failed and ran back to MLS because you weren’t good enough? Why don’t we speak about this? One of the best players in our country failed in Europe early in his career. No one killed him, but he’s killing all these young players that have done more than he ever has done in Europe.

"You played in a World Cup, I played in a World Cup. You played in a U-17 World Cup, U-20 World Cup Olympics. I did the same. What makes you different than a kid from Bunnell Florida. I did everything you did with fewer opportunities, and [I'm] still considered one of the best strikers this country has seen!!"

While Donovan didn't think Johnson hit the heights expected of him, he still enjoyed a decent career. He represented his country on 63 occasions, scoring 19 times, and played twice at the 2006 World Cup.

At club level, he enjoyed decent spells at FC Dallas, Kansas City Wizards, Seattle Sounders and DC United, while he also played for Fulham, Cardiff City and Preston North End.
