Legendary play-by-play announcer Al Michaels found himself getting some odd reviews after his work in the Prime Video booth for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 9 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
Michaels made a monumental mistake when he got Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s draft year wrong (2001 vs. 2021) during Jacksonville’s first offensive possession of the game, but it didn’t stop there. Later in the game, fans slammed Michaels for a winding anecdote about the formation of the Jaguars in 1993.
One fan gave a blunt assessment of Michaels’ winding commentary during crucial moments of the game.
“Dude needs to retire. So incredibly boring,” the fan wrote.
Another fan saw the funny side of Michaels’ commentary.
“His annoyance with the interception interrupting it was hilarious. Peak Al Michaels,” the fan laughed.
One fan gave an honest reaction to Michaels’ anecdote.
“It was more interesting than the game, honestly,”the fan remarked.
Another pointed out that the Amazon play-by-play announcer has not been enthusiastic about his job for years now.
“Al Michaels has been so over every game he’s broadcast since 2018,”Audacy’s Kyle Madson concluded.
One fan hilariously turned Michaels’ own words against him.
“I turned it off. Now I wish I hadn’t, because I wanna hear a bedtime story,” the fan posted.
Another fan acknowledged Michaels’ greatness, but also pointed out that the iconic commentator should have retired by now.
“My GOAT is washed; he should be enjoying his retirement atp,”the fan commented.
Michaels has had a legendary career in the booth, including serving as the voice of the “Miracle on Ice” game in 1980, when the USA men’s hockey team beat the Soviet Union. He was the lead play-by-play announcer for ABC’s Monday Night Football from 1986 to 2005 and for NBC’s Sunday Night Football from 2006 to 2021.
He joined Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football crew in 2022, signing a three-year deal reportedly worth $15 million annually. Michaels is in his fifth season on Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football, working alongside color commentator Kirk Herbstreit.
The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand has linked CBS commentator Ian Eagle with a move to Prime Video to replace Michaels when he finally retires.
The Amazon announcer is tied for the most Super Bowls called (11) and has called over 770 NFL prime-time games. Despite his vast experience, the mistakes in the booth have mounted over the years, and this season, fans have complained about the quality of the TNF broadcasts.
In the Week 7 clash between the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots at Soldier Field, Michaels referred to standouts Caleb Williams and Drake Maye as quarterbacks from “the class of 2014.”
Back in October, Michaels revealed during a segment of “The Dan Patrick Show” that he would know when it was time to retire, or his employers would tell him to leave.
