I'm getting used to playing two games a week - Nyoni
Trey Nyoni celebrates scoring his first goal for Liverpool against Fenerbahce

Trey Nyoni insists he is learning on the job and adapting to the challenge of playing two games a week for Liverpool after getting the "ultimate test" this week.

The 19-year-old made his first Premier League start in Sunday's loss to Arsenal, playing just under an hour, and then played 85 minutes against Fenerbahce on Wednesday, scoring his first goal for the club in a 3-2 defeat.

"It is new to me - playing this many games. I didn't even do that in the academy," said Nyoni.

"Slowly and steadily, I am adjusting to the pace and tempo of the game. You have to learn quick. There's a lot I have to learn, but I am enjoying it."

Liverpool are in advanced talks with Nyoni over a new contract. He signed a deal in 2025 after turning 18 and the understanding is that, like with Rio Ngumoha, the club are keen to tie down one of their brightest young talents. In the summer, a £30m bid for Nyoni from Nottingham Forest was rejected.

On his new deal, Nyoni said: "I am just leaving to my agents to sort it out. My main focus right now is playing football, performing every time I go on the pitch. The off-the-pitch stuff, I leave it to them."

Nyoni has benefited from the belief of Andoni Iraola. Liverpool chose not to sign a midfielder in the summer after Curtis Jones' sale and Nyoni has seized his opportunity, playing 598 minutes. He only got 237 first-team minutes last season.

"The faith in youth the manager has and the players around me have in me helps me settle a lot more," said Nyoni.

"There are lots of senior players around me who help me a lot. I just want to stay as I am. I never get nervous. Every time you pull on a Liverpool shirt, there are always high standards.

"We [Nyoni, Ngumoha and Lewis Kouamas] are always pushing each other. Obviously, we are young and doing well but, ultimately, our aim is to help the team try to win games and set an example for the next guys coming through the academy."

Nyoni has come up against the likes of Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and N'Golo Kante over the past few days.

"To get where I want to get to, I have to be able to compete against the best players in the world," added Nyoni, who has been called up to the England Under-21s squad for games against Portugal and France later this month.

"The last week has been a really good learning experience but I just have to keep going."
