I work from home, which means I’m always one patch of sunlight away from abandoning my apartment, grabbing a coffee, and opening my computer somewhere else for a few hours. But if the FIFA World Cup is on during the workday, I’m not going to sit there and act like a cold beer and a bar stool aren’t a much better use of my portable office setup.
Well, with weekday World Cup matches set to land right in the middle of U.S. working hours, Stella Artois is actually encouraging fans (21 and up, of course) to take their laptops to a bar instead of staying glued to a desk. Because if you’re going to half-work and half-watch anyway, you may as well do it somewhere with screens, people, and a bartender, right?
Stella is also putting actual money behind the concept. Soccer fanatics who head to a local bar or pub during weekday match hours, buy a Stella Artois or Stella Artois 0.0, and submit their receipt as an “expense report” can be reimbursed, with the brand setting aside $100,000 total for the campaign.
“‘Work From Bar’ is built on a simple belief: the best moments of the tournament happen in the stadiums outside the stadiums, where the real energy of the game lives,” said Chris Jones, VP of Marketing for Premium Brands at Anheuser-Busch. “Whether it’s coworkers swapping conference rooms for bar stools or employers giving their teams permission to be part of the action, WFB is about creating space for genuine human connection around the world’s biggest sporting event.”
And if you’re lucky enough to be in New York City, Stella is taking the whole thing a step further. Starting June 28 for the knockout rounds, the brand is opening a Work From Bar HQ at Brookfield Place, complete with TVs, outlets, and even a reservable conference room. Sign-ups for that conference room open June 22, which adds a nice little layer of plausible deniability to the whole thing.
I wouldn’t say this is exactly the ideal setting for your strongest Excel work. It is, however, a very solid place to keep one eye on Slack and the other on the match.
