Commanders' Stefon Diggs focused on what he can control

The Washington Commanders’ 2026 season hasn’t gone the way anyone expected. This team had incredibly high hopes at the start, but things quickly went sideways when Jayden Daniels re-injured his elbow. He wasn't the first to go down with an injury; there have been plenty more this season that have impacted how the team performs.

Despite all that, the Commanders still have a path to the top of the division. Washington is currently 3rd in the NFC East, but the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants aren’t far ahead. In fact, if Dallas loses on Sunday and the Commanders win, they'll be tied for second place. A couple of losses by the Giants mix the division up even more. The two teams meet again next week, too.

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs was recently asked about where the Commanders stand in the division, and his response is epic.

Diggs is asked how aware they are of the division. “I honestly didn’t even know,” he replied. “So, I’m the worst person to ask right now. I feel like just focus on this game, one game at a time. You don’t really know what’s going to happen around you. Guys are going to lose, guys are going to win, you can’t control them. You’re not part of their team, you’re not part of their game plan, but you wish them nothing but the worst. (Diggs laughs)

“I’m just kidding, but you just gotta control what you can control.”

Diggs can say he’s kidding all he wants, but the reality is, you want the teams in the way of the team you want to win to lose. It doesn’t matter which team you’re on; you want to win games, and you want your opponents and rivals to lose.

However, the veteran wide receiver is right about one thing: You can only control what you can control. You hope for certain outcomes, but those outcomes don’t matter if you aren’t doing your part, too. In football, that means winning games. If the Commanders don’t win on Sunday, it won’t matter what the Cowboys and Giants do in their games because Washington will remain below them.
