Yankees GM Brian Cashman agrees to contract, to return for 30th season

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and the team have agreed to a new contract, allowing him to return to the role for a 30th season in 2027.

Cashman, 59, announced his own re-signing on Wednesday in a video news conference. He did not reveal any contract terms, but his current deal was set to expire this fall.

"We've agreed on a new contract that we just have to bang out some minor stuff on the back end of it, but we're locked and loaded," Cashman said.

Cashman was just 31 when the late George Steinbrenner, who was known for churning through managers and general managers, promoted him -- and kept him in the job. His first significant trade came Feb. 6, 1998, when he sent future All-Star shortstop Cristian Guzman and three prospects to the Minnesota Twins for infielder Chuck Knoblauch.

During Cashman's tenure, the Yankees have never had a losing season. They have won four World Series, seven American League pennants and 15 AL East titles. Nine of those came consecutively in Cashman's first nine seasons, with Joe Torre as the field manager.

In Cashman's 29 seasons, the Yankees have failed to qualify for the postseason just five times.

But the Yankees have not won the World Series since 2009, leading to some disgruntlement among fans. Still, Cashman enjoys the support of owner Hal Steinbrenner, who spoke favorably of both Cashman and manager Aaron Boone.

"Cash is great every season," Steinbrenner said on the video call from Tampa, Fla., where he sat with Cashman at team facilities. "I mean, I think the roster he put together, the team that we rolled out of spring training with, was as good as any in baseball, in my opinion.

"We had a lot of bumps and bruises along the way, but the team was fantastic. And I thought it was a world championship team.

"Talking about this season, I thought Boone managed a good season, especially with the pitching staff. We had a lot of additions and subtractions in the rotation throughout the course of the season. Our bullpen was absolutely exhausted by the end of the season. He got through all that and he got us to the playoffs."

But the players didn't do their jobs, he said.

"The bottom line is, the players didn't live up to their end of the bargain in the playoffs," he said. "So I thought (Boone) had a good season."

Boone is expected to remain the manager of the Yankees, who finished 93-68 and defeated the Boston Red Sox in the wild-card round before losing to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series.
