Four Talking Points As Ipswich Town Women Beat Sunderland
ITFC IMAGE - 24/08/26

Ipswich Town Women continued their impressive start to the season with a 3-1 victory against Sunderland.

With neither team having lost a game yet, there was lots to be excited about. However, Hughes put Sunderland ahead. But the Tractor Girls responded with a sensational goal from Georgia Timms. Princess Ademiluyi then scored a brace in the second half.

The victory lifts David Wright’s side to second place in the league, just 2 points away from leaders Newcastle United. This adds to the confidence of this team being a threat at the top of the table. Here are 4 talking points from a great afternoon for Town.

Ademiluyi Continues To Shine

Princess Ademiluyi is providing us with another headline-grabbing performance every week. She scored twice in the second half, helping Ipswich to come from behind in a tight game and cruise to victory. Ademiluyi has been causing defenders problems.

She was just too much for Sunderland to handle. She took the ball down the line and finished well to score her first goal. Her second goal was arguably even better. She ran into the perfect position to volley a stunning chip over the keeper after a lovely cross from Maria Boswell.

The goals give her another tally to add to her name, showing why she is becoming one of the most dangerous attackers in the division. When she is confident running at defenders, Ipswich are always a threat.

Town Responded Brilliantly to the Early Setback

Ipswich could have been rattled by falling behind so early but responded brilliantly. The visitors went ahead from a corner which Ipswich should have dealt with better. However, Hughes was able to head into the bottom corner.

But the Blues responded fantastically. They didn’t let their frustration get the better of them and came back on the front foot. They were rewarded with a goal just 7 minutes later. Timms showed great composure and strength to wriggle away from her defender to score in the top corner.

This gave Ipswich a confidence boost. They were able to build from here. They shouldn’t underestimate how well they dealt with falling behind to another unbeaten side.

The Red Card Changed Everything

Just minutes into the second half, Tess Laplacette raced towards Timms but lost out on pace. She pulled the Town forward and the referee didn’t hold back, showing her a red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

From this point it looked like Ipswich had turned the game around. Sunderland had been playing well defensively in the second half but to play over 40 minutes with 10 players against a quality attacking side was a huge ask.

However, Town played well with good passing and put pressure on Sunderland. They eventually doubled their lead with a goal from Ademiluyi. Great teams know when to take their chances, and Ipswich did.

This Felt Like a Statement Win

There have been so many positives this season but this was a special win. Sunderland were unbeaten going into the game and presented one of the biggest tests of the season. But Ipswich rose to the occasion and played well.

Even before the sending off, David Wright’s side began to take control. Aimee Palmer hit the post before half time and Ipswich began to look more and more dangerous going forward. This carried over into the second half.

Although they have been winning games, winning games against teams chasing promotion is a different story. This looks like it will be a pivotal result in the coming months looking back on the season.

Momentum Continues To Build

Despite the international break, Ipswich Town Women look to be picking up momentum. Coming into second place after beating another unbeaten side is another big step in an exciting campaign.

Ademiluyi is playing brilliantly, Timms and others are contributing, and there is a lot to be positive about with more competition for places in the squad. They now turn their attention to the Subway Players Cup clash with Watford. Followed by returning to league action at home versus Bristol City.

If Town continue to play like this, they will definitely be in the promotion race.
