David Finlay and Clark Connors had a different name in mind for their AEW faction before settling on The Dogs. However, a potential conflict with WWE reportedly got in the way. The duo originally wanted to call themselves the Raw Dogs, but the name was difficult to use because of its connection to RAW.

Finlay and Connors currently compete in AEW alongside Gabe Kidd as The Dogs. The trio previously established themselves as members of the War Dogs faction in NJPW. During a recent appearance on What Happened When with Tony Schiavone, the wrestlers discussed how they came up with their current name.

Clark Connors explains why The Dogs didn’t use their original name

Connors revealed that The Dogs wasn’t their first choice when they arrived in AEW. The duo had another name in mind, but it came with a potential problem.

“Well, when we came over here, we just became The Dogs, but we really wanted to pitch the name Raw Dogs. But I think there’s an issue with that whole Monday Night thing,” Connors said.

His comment referred to WWE’s Monday Night RAW. Neither wrestler explained whether any specific legal or trademark concerns emanated, but the connection apparently made their preferred name difficult to use.

Finlay and Connors still liked the original idea. Connors explained why they thought Raw Dogs would have been a fitting name for the group.

“But it sounds cool because we’re raw f*cking dogs, you know?” he said.

Despite having to go with another name, the duo seems happy with the result. Connors explained that The Dogs also has a strong identity and pointed out that no other major wrestling team had used the name the same way.

“But The Dogs also is a sick name. It’s just no one’s ever done it before. No one’s been The Dogs,” Connors stated.

Schiavone agreed that the name could become more recognizable as AEW continues featuring the faction on TV. He suggested that fans would get used to hearing it as the group appeared more often. Connors agreed.
