Cardiff had raced into a 3-0 first-half advantage thanks to a hat-trick from Jack Moylan, leaving West Ham with a mountain to climb after the break.
But Divine Mukasa started the fightback before Engels made it 3-2, grabbing his first goal since joining the London club.
Maximilian Kilman then completed the comeback as West Ham rescued a point from an extraordinary encounter at the Cardiff City Stadium.
It proved a memorable night for Engels as he continues the latest chapter of his career in English football following his spell at Celtic.
His goal also came in Scott Parker’s first match in charge of West Ham, with the new boss watching his side respond impressively after a disastrous opening 45 minutes.
The result leaves West Ham eighth in the Championship and occupying the final play-off position.
