‘Do You Even Watch Football?’ ‘Better Than (Patrick) Mahomes’ — NFL Fans Get Vocal As Ryan Clark Kickstarts Brock Purdy MVP Debate

With the Seattle Seahawks coming off a Super Bowl win and the Los Angeles Rams beefing up an already stout defense, it was easy to count the San Francisco 49ers out in a loaded NFC West before the season began.

But at 6-0, the Niners have quickly silenced the doubters and look like one of the best teams in the league. For Ryan Clark, much of that success comes down to the brilliance of quarterback Brock Purdy.

In fact, following San Francisco’s Monday Night Football win over the Washington Commanders, Clark was ready to put Purdy in the MVP conversation, and then some. His take, however, sparked a debate among fans online.

Ryan Clark Sparks Debate About Brock Purdy

Purdy had already put together an impressive resume heading into Monday’s game. He had thrown for 1,196 yards and 13 touchdowns with just two interceptions and been sacked only three times, all in the Niners’ Week 5 win over the rival Seahawks.

That production had him ranked No. 1 in the league with a 93.0 PFN QB Impact Score.

Purdy kept things rolling against Washington, throwing for 264 yards and a touchdown on just 29 attempts while adding to his season rushing totals, which climbed to 156 yards and a score.

Following the 23-17 win, Clark took to X to give Purdy his flowers and make his case for the 49ers quarterback as an MVP contender.

“As long as Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen are alive, it’ll be hard to call Brock Purdy the best quarterback in football,” Clark tweeted. “That doesn’t (mean) he isn’t playing like it. MVP Purdy right now.”

Not everyone was buying Clark’s take, though. Some fans pushed back, with one questioning the analyst’s football knowledge.

“Do you even watch football, or do you just spew out these ridiculous and dated takes?” the fan asked.

Another dismissed Clark’s opinion as “trash,” while yet another fan had a different pick for MVP, arguing, “Kenneth Walker should be the MVP right now, but since it’s a quarterback award, he’ll have to settle for OPOY.”

Another fan took issue with Clark’s stance, calling out the former Pittsburgh Steelers player for seemingly holding back on what he really thought about Purdy.

“You don’t need to tweet anything,”the fan wrote. “You guys feel disgusted to say how you see it. So, don’t embarrass yourself or be ashamed of not including Purdy’s name. Just call Mahomes and Allen the best QBs in the league. We are okay.”

Still, many fans who backed Purdy were glad to see Clark give the 49ers quarterback his due. One of them argued that Purdy had earned a place alongside the league’s top quarterbacks, writing, “All you need to do is watch Purdy play, and you know he’s as good as those guys.”

One X user went a step further, claiming, “Since Purdy came into the league in 2022, his cumulative performance has been much better than Mahomes.”

Another fan held a similar opinion, as he added, “Purdy has been better than Mahomes the past couple of years, but you’re not supposed to say that out loud.”

Mahomes, of course, has won an MVP and two Super Bowls since Purdy entered the league, including one against the 49ers quarterback. Still, one fan argued that Purdy had done enough to be considered ahead of both Mahomes and Josh Allen.

“What does he need to do for you to consider him better than Mahomes and Allen? Which QB would you start a franchise with out of those three? That means you don’t get Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, and no Kenneth Walker III,” the fan wrote.

Moreover, the user believed Purdy’s ability to elevate his teammates was what set him apart from Mahomes and Allen, adding, “Purdy makes everyone around him better. For me, that’s the difference between the three.”

Whether this is just a hot streak or the new normal for the former Mr. Irrelevant remains to be seen. But with the 49ers boasting the best record in the NFL through six weeks, Purdy has his team looking like a serious Super Bowl contender.
