Gareth Morgan to become new Manchester United assistant head

Manchester United’s rebuild is extending beyond the first-team dressing room, with the club continuing to reshape the people responsible for developing its next generation.

Carrington has long been a source of senior players, and the academy remains central to United’s identity.

The emergence of talents such as Kobbie Mainoo underlines the importance of creating an environment where young footballers can progress through the age groups and ultimately reach the first team.

That process depends on more than identifying gifted youngsters, however, with coaching standards and a consistent football philosophy playing a crucial role.

Academy director Stephen Torpey has been looking to strengthen those foundations since taking charge in 2025.

The appointment of Darren Hughes earlier this year was another step towards building a more unified approach to player and coach development.

Gareth Morgan to become new Manchester United assistant head

United have now moved to bring Gareth Morgan in from the Football Association as Assistant Head of Academy Football Development and Methodology, where he will work under Hughes, as reported by the Training Ground Guru on their website.

Gareth Morgan is leaving the FA after 12 years, bringing extensive experience from the organisation responsible for developing coaching standards across English football.

Morgan has worked in youth coach development at the FA, including as a Professional Game Youth Coach Developer and course director for the Advanced Youth Award.

The programme is aimed at coaches working with young players in professional academies under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP), covering areas such as technical, tactical, physical, social and psychological development.

His experience therefore aligns closely with the responsibilities he will take on at Carrington.

The new role will support the delivery of United’s academy coaching programmes, methodology and development frameworks.

The focus is on establishing consistent standards across the academy while helping coaches improve and ensuring players receive the right guidance as they move through different stages of their development.

It is a long-term project rather than a quick fix, with the intention of improving the pathway from youth football towards senior-level opportunities.

Morgan will work alongside Hughes, who joined United from Manchester City in March after almost 12 years at the Etihad.

Hughes was previously City’s Head of Coaching and Head of Individual Player Development, roles that involved shaping coaching practices and building programmes to improve individual players.

His appointment created the new Head of Academy Football Development and Methodology position, with responsibility for long-term player and coach development, coaching programmes and alignment with EPPP requirements.

There is a related predecessor to note, although the titles are not identical.

Mick Matthews joined United from the FA in 2023 as Academy Coach Development Manager after 26 years with the governing body.

The addition of another experienced coach developer signals continued investment in the work that happens behind the scenes at Carrington.
