The India seamer picked the day he first wore a Test cap against West Indies to announce he is stepping away from the format.

Mohammed Shami made the announcement on Instagram on Friday 6 November, 13 years to the day after his Test debut against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

He took 9-118 in that match, including 5-47 in the second innings, and finished with 229 Test wickets in 64 matches at an average of 27.71.

He took five wickets in an innings six times, among them 5-28 at Johannesburg in 2018, and claimed eight wickets in the first Test at Centurion.

He finishes sixth among India’s fast bowlers for Test wickets.

His last Test was the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia, and he has not played a Test since.

He was the leading wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup with 24 wickets in seven innings.

Shami said the Test cap had given him his identity and thanked his support staff and fans.

He also thanked the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal for backing him early.

The BCCI thanked him for defining an era of Indian pace bowling.

Former India coach Ravi Shastri said he was disappointed and believed Shami had another 30 or 40 Test wickets in him.

He questioned the fitness concerns given Shami’s workload for Bengal.

Shami played three Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal this season and took 14 wickets.

He will keep playing white-ball cricket, including the IPL and domestic tournaments, and has said he may play four-day matches if fitness requires.
