Carlos Alcaraz captured the 28th title of his career and his fourth of the season at the Vienna Open on Sunday after defeating Alex de Minaur in the final.
After reaching the final without conceding a set, Alcaraz capped off a flawless campaign in Vienna with a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory over De Minaur. The Spaniard increased his ATP 500 title count to 11, which ranks fourth all-time behind Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Alcaraz also extended his undefeated streak against De Minaur to 7-0, having only ever dropped two sets to the Australian. A day after losing the final, De Minaur took to Instagram to say: “A special week in Vienna.
“Thank you for all the support throughout the week, even if things didn’t go my way today. Congrats @carlitosalcarazz! Always a pleasure… even if you make my job a little annoying,” he joked. Replying to De Minaur’s post, Alcaraz said: “You are so great, Alex! Here’s to all that’s coming.”
Alcaraz and De Minaur have since travelled to Paris for the final ATP Masters 1000 tournament of the season, where they will both receive a bye. There is extra motivation for De Minaur to go far at the Paris Masters, as he is bidding to qualify for the ATP Finals.
Four players have officially confirmed their spots in Turin for the ATP Finals: Alexander Zverev, Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev. As it stands, Flavio Cobolli, Arthur Fils, Frances Tiafoe and Rafael Jodar are set to join them, all of whom would be debutants.
De Minaur is ninth in the race to Turin with 3,170 live points to his name, trailing eighth-placed Jodar, who has 3,234. As well as De Minaur, Djokovic, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul and Jiri Lehecka are all battling it out for a place in the ATP Finals.
De Minaur will take on either Andrey Rublev or Tomas Martin Etcheverry in his opening match at the ATP Masters 1000 event. De Minaur is making his ninth appearance at the Paris Masters, where he has recorded three consecutive quarterfinal finishes.
His best result at an ATP Masters 1000 tournament is a runner-up finish at the 2023 Canadian Open.
