For more than two decades, Roy Keane has bristled every time anyone has referred to him as a Champions League winner.

Keane starred en-route to Manchester United's 1999 triumph, scoring in the semi-final against Juventus in what many regard to be his finest hour as a United player.

An errant tackle on Zinedine Zidane saw Keane pick up a needless yellow card, a card which ruled him out of the final with Bayern Munich.

The Irishman played no role as United grabbed two goals in stoppage time to stun Bayern and steal the trophy, and while he received a medal, Keane has always felt distant from the title due to the fact that he never played in the final.

He has reiterated this many times in the past 28 years, but on the latest episode of Stick to Football, he revealed that his stance has softened and he now views that medal in a different light.

On the episode, the notion of replaying a game from the past came up, and Gary Neville immediately brought up that semi-final in Turin.

Gary Neville: "We should replay it, because one, it was your best game, and secondly, you could get rid of the yellow card, maybe."

Roy Keane: "Yeah, maybe. But that's the journey...I accepted it about two years ago on a drive back to Ireland. It came to me. Truthfully."

Ian Wright: "Seriously?"

Keane: "Yeah. I made peace with all of it. That was all part of my journey in accepting the situation. Accepting, maybe, I kinda deserved a medal for it."

Neville: "Well, you did."

Keane: "No, I did, but for years I didn't believe it. I was always like, 'Ah, when you miss a game.' But, when you look back, you go, 'You know what?' I see other players, who didn't play many games, but would get on and were involved in the squad. They're the first person I'd be saying, 'Of course you deserve [one], you're part of the squad.' I kind of did it myself. But, no, maybe I deserved it. It took a few years for acceptance, and I got it about two years ago."
