Ravindra Jadeja’s place in India’s ODI team looks uncertain in the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. After failing to make a big impact in the first two ODIs against the West Indies, Ravindra Jadeja was left out of the playing XI for the third match in New Chandigarh.
Although captain Shubman Gill said that Jadeja was rested and not dropped, the senior all-rounder’s absence from the ODI squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour has raised questions on his future. Earlier, Gurnoor Brar and Manav Suthar were left out of India’s New Zealand Test squad.
India have reportedly started looking beyond Ravindra Jadeja for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027, with the veteran all-rounder not part of their current plans for the tournament.
Axar Patel is said to be ahead of Jadeja in the race for the left-arm spin all-rounder’s spot because of his wicket-taking ability and batting flexibility.
Meanwhile, Washington Sundar, Harsh Dubey, and Shahbaz Ahmed are also among the options being considered by the team management.
A source was quoted by the Times of India as saying, "He is not in India’s scheme of things for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Axar and Washington were playing in the Asian Games, whereas Harsh Dubey and Shahbaz Ahmed are at the CoE because they were injured.
And when it comes to the left-arm spin all-rounder option, Axar is ahead of Jadeja. Axar has more wicket-taking ability and can bat as a floater from No. 4 to No. 7 in the middle overs. By no means is he inferior when it comes to fielding.”
Ravindra Jadeja’s recent numbers have also made his return to India’s ODI plans increasingly difficult. The left-arm spinner managed only two wickets in the first two ODIs against the West Indies and did not get a chance to bat. His recent record in the format has also been a concern.
Since the 2023 ODI World Cup, Jadeja has played only 15 of India’s 32 ODIs, taking 14 wickets at an average of 47.92 and an economy rate of 5.20. His performances have become even more worrying over the last 12 months as Jadeja has taken only one wicket in seven ODIs.
He also struggled to complete his full 10-over quota in several matches against New Zealand and South Africa. Since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, Jadeja has managed just five wickets in eight matches, while his economy rate has crossed six runs per over.
These numbers have put pressure on the experienced all-rounder as India looks to build a strong squad for the ICC ODI World Cup 2027. Amid this, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana to undergo match simulations ahead of New Zealand tour.
Jadeja’s batting has traditionally added value to his all-round skills, but his recent numbers have not been impressive. He has not scored an ODI half-century in the last six years and has managed only 149 runs in 10 innings since the 2023 World Cup.
Across 212 ODI matches, Jadeja has scored 13 half-centuries in 142 innings. His main responsibility has been to control the scoring rate with the ball and provide useful runs lower down the order. However, his recent performances have made it difficult for him to stand out among the other spin-bowling all-rounders in the 50-over format of the game.
