South Africa first up for Wales at major World Cup

Wales take their place in the IMC over-40s World Cup, which gets underway in Guyana today.

All-rounder Iroshan De Silva, who has now signed for Marchwiel and Wrexham, and Northop batsman Sion Morris are part of the touring party for the tournament and they flew out from Gatwick earlier this week.

De Silva said: “To be playing for Wales in such a big tournament is unbelievable and something I’m really looking forward to and something I feel really proud of.”

Wales open their tournament against defending champions South Africa at the Lusignan Community Centre Ground on Sunday.

Morris said: “It is hugely exciting, going somewhere and playing cricket somewhere I would never have dreamt of going to.

“Getting to play out there and getting to play in the Amazon Rainforest. It’s hugely exciting, but there’s also nerves. We want to do well.”

Wales are captained by spin bowler Gareth Edwards, who hails from Ruthin, while Chester Boughton Hall’s Atif Qureshi and former Hall skipper Lee Dixon, who now plays for Upton, are also in the squad.
