Arsenal Legend Backs Leeds United Star to be England Starter at Euro 2028

Oct 20, 2026, 7:15 AM GMT+1

After deciding late that he wanted a career in sports journalism, Daniel worked his way up the ladder in an unconventional manner.

Having opted against university, Daniel worked with Sky Sports as a freelance contributor and translator during transfer windows while also volunteering on several other blog pages and outlets to get a portfolio of content together.

Daniel then worked with Barnet FC as part of their social media team before starting his own website, which focused on football and MMA content.

That eventually led to work with 90min and Reach PLC with The Mirror, Daily Record, Daily Express, and Manchester Evening News.

Following that, Daniel spent two-and-a-half years with Breaking Media covering Everton, Rangers, Leeds, West Ham and other clubs before joining GiveMeSport as a Premier League editor.

As well as football, Daniel is a huge MMA fan and has appeared on YouTube and podcast content too.

Arsenal legend David Seaman has backed Leeds United star James Trafford to become England number one at Euro 2028.

Trafford was handed a starting berth in the recent international camp for the Three Lions, starting in the 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley and in the 2-0 win over Czechia, as manager Thomas Tuchel handed him an opportunity to stake his claim for a starting spot.

Jordan Pickford returned to the side for the final two games of the camp, a 7-0 win over Croatia and a 3-0 win over Czechia, with many believing that the Everton star has done enough to retain his shirt for now.

But Trafford is now playing regular football, having secured a £40m+ move from Man City to Leeds after a disappointing campaign at the Etihad Stadium last season, where he signed from Burnley before being immediately ousted as number one by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

That regular football at the top level will be vital for him to become the England number one heading into the future, according to Seaman, who was speaking to Betway, and the former England icon admitted that he sees a lot of himself in the Leeds star.

"Someone like James Trafford is very calm, and I saw him in the England game and was really impressed," he said.

"It was a good test for him, but he was really calm, and when I look at him, I see a lot of my style in his goalkeeping.

"This is great for him, because now a new manager has put his belief in him. When he went to City, he played a few games and then they bought Donnarumma, which was a massive kick in the teeth for him. To spend all that time being the number two was tough for him.

"But now Daniel Farke has got belief in him, got him to Leeds, and we’re seeing a goalkeeper now who is gaining confidence and experience. Thomas Tuchel showed belief in him, put him in for the game against Spain, the World Cup winners. That’s massive. It’s a big test, and he just handled it as though he was playing for the reserves.

"It was great to see him so calm in a big game like that. I’m more than happy that he’s at Leeds, obviously, and now we need to watch this space because it’s time for him to put pressure on Jordan [Pickford]."

Trafford was part of the England squad that travelled to the USA for the World Cup this past summer, and he watched on from the bench as the team secured a third-place finish without playing a single minute.

But when asked who would be the England number one at the next major tournament in 2028, which will be held in England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland, Leeds fan Seaman admitted that the 24-year-old has every chance of taking Pickford's spot.

"That’s going to be close," he said.

"When you look at Jordan and what he’s done for England, you’re not really expecting him to be left out. But James is going to be pushing him now, and this is what he needs. Now Trafford’s playing for Leeds regularly, and he’s been given the nod by Tuchel to show that he trusts him against the world champions. That was a massive boost of confidence for James Trafford. We saw a goalkeeper that’s very capable of performing at that level.

"I’m 50/50, if I’m honest, and that’s because of how highly I rate James Trafford. Jordan’s level is up there because of what he’s doing for England, and he’s now doing it more regularly for Everton as well.

"It wasn’t his best World Cup, he knows that, but he’s still got all that experience. Now it’s about seeing how he can perform when there’s a real contender."

Both Trafford and Pickford are expected to be named in the squad for the UEFA Nations League games against Croatia and Spain next month, and it will be interesting to see who Tuchel selects as his starting goalkeeper.
