Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy was seen struggling to walk just after halftime in their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with a bizarre explanation given
Mike McCarthy could not be in the locker room with his Pittsburgh Steelers team at halftime after he sustained a bizarre injury, reportedly caused by an interview with a CBS sideline reporter.
The Steelers head coach could be seen walking gingerly on the field before the camera cut to him being helped into the blue medical tent, where players have their injuries treated. It's rare to see an NFL head coach in the tent, which actually kept him from speaking to his team at halftime.
And, incredibly, reports suggest that an interview with a sideline reporter may have caused it. It comes after fans were left furious with the NFL Network after their cameraman missed Travis Hunter's interception.
RedZone host Scott Hanson said, "We are being told he did not go into the locker room at halftime; he spent it in the blue medical tent. That is bizarre. He had an injury and went to the blue medical tent for 15 minutes.
"There is a separate that he did something to his leg when he was doing his halftime interview. The CBS sideline reporter asked the coach for an interview, which could have been what happened? This is a unique circumstance."
CBS Sports AJ Ross gave some clarity, stating: "It was kind of a freak thing as Mike McCarthy was coming over to speak with me at halftime, and I’m being told by Steelers staff, ‘Of course he’s going to continue coaching here in the second half,'”
"And he didn’t cross the field to go into the locker room because he wanted to just make sure that everything was OK. The training staff attended to him at halftime.”
McCarthy appears not to be too hurt as he continued to coach after halftime, but was not able to be in the locker room with his team.
The Steelers may have needed their head coach at halftime, as they adjusted after a poor start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are playing without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels led the Buccaneers to a 13-3 lead at halftime, with Aaron Rodgers being intercepted and failing to throw for 100 yards.
It's a game the Buccaneers will feel they need to win, after a 0-4 start to the season, before securing a statement win over the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday Night Football.
Meanwhile, the Steelers look to move to 4-2 with a win before traveling to Paris to face the New Orleans Saints.
The NFL Paris game is expected to take place as scheduled, but demonstrations across France have led to safety concerns.
