Leaders Wrexham forced to work hard for victory at Barry

The hosts are still searching for their first win of the season, but they threatened to battle back after finding the target late in the first half.

However, Jenny Sugarman’s Reds, who were two-up when they conceded, sealed the deal in the second half to make sure of their seventh win in eight matches this season by a 3-1 margin.

Earlier in the season, Wrexham got the better of Barry 7-0 at home and they didn’t take too long to get their noses in front during the return meeting.

After 17 minutes, the opening goal of the contest arrived with Natasha Thomas scoring from Maria Francis-Jones’ assist.

Things got even better for the defending champions when they doubled their advantage six minutes later.

Lili Jones played the ball to Faye Knox, who fired a powerful strike into the top corner of the net.

Erin Murray pulled one back in the 43rd minute, while Wrexham ended the half seeking to reclaim their two-goal cushion.

Ava Suckley was denied by a good save from home keeper Molly Arneson, while Jones struck the post with her effort from the edge of the box.

The Reds were on the front foot when the second half got underway.

Thomas created an opportunity with her cross to Suckley, who put her effort wide of the target.

However, Wrexham did regain their two-goal advantage in the 54th minute. Francis-Jones’ corner caused chaos in the box and it went straight into the net.

There were a couple of late opportunities for the visitors to add to their tally, with Millie Davies putting her effort into the side-netting, while Mikayla Cook forced a diving save from the Barry keeper.

This latest win keeps Wrexham top on goal difference from The New Saints, who made a return to winning ways courtesy of their comfortable 4-0 victory at home to basement side Aberystwyth Town.

The Saints were looking to bounce back from their defeat at Cardiff City last time out and they were in control following first half strikes from Fiona Barry and. Caitlin Chapman. Abbie Iddenden and Barry bagged second half goals.

Third-placed Cardiff City were comprehensive 6-0 winners at Briton Ferry Llansawel, while Cardiff Met lost out 2-0 to Swansea City.

Flint Town United missed out on the chance to move into top spot in the Adran North rankings.

A win at home to Llanfair United would have put Flint into pole position, but it was the visitors who replaced Wrexham Foresters at the top thanks to a 5-1 outcome.

Kelsey Davies struck in the second half for Flint, while Sophie Cook scored twice for Llanfair.

North East Wales League leaders Connah’s Quay Nomads U19s defeated Hawarden Park 4-2. Elin Thomas, Magan Galeandro (2) and Daisy Willons sealed the win, as Emily Hughes-Jones and Lexi Weaver kept Park interested.
