Just a few seasons ago, Oklahoma Sooners star safety Peyton Bowen was one of the top high school recruits in the country. Bowen initially committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish before flipping to the Oregon Ducks on signing day. He eventually signed with the Sooners.
Bowen has been a key contributor over his four seasons, but injuries have kept him from reaching his full potential. He has 153 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks and four interceptions in his career. Bowen has broken out this year and become one of the top safeties in college football. He was recently named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award given to the nation's top defensive back.
Head coach Brent Venables praised Bowen's play through seven games this season.
"He's had a fantastic year through seven games," Venables said. "Done a fabulous job when it comes to consistencies, preparation. Coach Hall's done a great job of coaching him and mentoring him. He's taken tremendous ownership, and how he shows up into the building every day."
Bowen's emergence has been a major boost for an Oklahoma defense that continues to perform at a high level under Venables. His consistency and preparation have helped him become a dependable presence in the secondary, while his ability to make plays on the ball has added another dimension to the Sooners' defense. After dealing with injuries earlier in his career, Bowen is showing why Norman had such high expectations for him.
Being named a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist marks another milestone in Bowen's development, but he still has the chance to finish the season strong. As Oklahoma moves deeper into SEC play, his leadership and production will matter more against talented opposing offenses. If he maintains his current level, Bowen can strengthen his national reputation while helping the Sooners pursue their goals for the rest of the season.
