Zane Smith did little to hide his frustration with Carson Hocevar in Phoenix, crashing into his rival during the cool-down lap of the Freeway Insurance 500.
Zane Smith and Carson Hocevar reignited their bitter feud during a post-race flare-up on the cool-down lap of Sunday's Freeway Insurance 500.
With 15 laps remaining in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway, Smith was running eighth into Turn 3 when Hocevar washed up the track, hitting into his rear and Josh Berry's No. 21 Ford. The Front Row Motorsports driver lost several positions as a result of the collision, ultimately settling for P15.
Smith did little to hide his frustration after the checkered flag waved, ramming hard into the back of Hocevar at 140 mph on the cool-down lap. The Spire Motorsports star quickly attempted to clear the air, revealing that a push from Ross Chastain caused him to slide up the track.
"Just make sure they know the damn 1 car [Chastain] shipped us, tried to crash us all," Hocevar said over the team radio. A member of his crew agreed to relay the message, replying: "Yeah, copy. On it. Zane doesn't know, but he does now. All good on the 38."
The game of telephone eventually reached Smith, with a member of Front Row Motorsports telling him over the radio, "Zane, just so you know, the 1 [Chastain] was apparently the one that shipped the 77 [Hocevar] into us."
Yet Smith appeared to have little interest in the explanation, clapping back: "I don't give an f---." The fiery response didn't come as a surprise to his team, with someone adding, "Yeah, I figured. I was just letting you know."
This is hardly the first time that Smith and Hocevar have butted heads this season. On Lap 32 of the Eero 400 back in July, the pair were running inside the top-20 when they collided in Turn 2. The No. 38 Ford tagged the No. 77 Chevrolet, sending both vehicles sliding hard into the wall at Chicagoland Speedway.
Fans and analysts widely speculated that Smith intentionally drove into Hocevar as payback for an incident at Iowa Speedway the previous year, when Hocevar lost control and slammed into Smith's left rear, sending the 27-year-old crashing into the wall.
In a subsequent appearance on the 'Bussin with the Boys' podcast, Smith did little to hide his disdain for Hocevar. "He'll try to talk to you after, saying, 'I don't talk to anybody out there.' He's full of s---," the 27-year-old said. "He tries to be your buddy, and then will go and screw you. And so it's like, don't even talk to me in the first place, because one, I don't like you, and we're gonna eventually have a run-in together, so let's just not talk in the first place.
"He'll put us both into a bad spot where it's costing us lap time, and neither of us is benefiting from it, so that part gets frustrating. But I remember, he made a mistake - or I don't know if he made a mistake - but he wrecked us, and then he spends the rest of the race waving at me, playing nice guy, like, 'Oh man, I'm so sorry.' And then he goes on social media and posts like 'I don't give a f---.'
"If you're going to be the guy hiding behind social media, that's a coward in my opinion. Act that way in person. Say that to my face - but don't be one way in person, and then hide behind your phone."
