‘Surgery to the Schedule’ — NFL Insider Drops Theory Behind More Weekday Games in Future After Spotting Strange Trend in Primetime Matchups

Mike Florio went looking at the Chicago Bears’ schedule and came away wondering how many nights the NFL eventually wants on everyone’s calendar.

Chicago’s upcoming run of three consecutive primetime appearances caught his attention. After noticing similar stretches for other teams, the NFL insider floated a theory about what the league might be testing for the future.

Mike Florio Questions NFL’s Consecutive Primetime Games

Speaking on “Pro Football Talk,” Florio pointed to Chicago’s Thursday matchup against the New England Patriots, followed by a Monday night trip to face the Seattle Seahawks and a Sunday night home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Those games fall on Oct. 22, Nov. 2, and Nov. 8. Bears fans will get plenty of national television time before the team’s Week 10 bye.

The opening matchup also features two quarterbacks sitting alongside each other in PFN’sQB Impact Rankings. Through Week 6, Caleb Williams ranks sixth with an 82.8 grade, just ahead of Drake Maye at seventh with an 82.7.

Florio said he had also noticed three-game primetime stretches involving the Dallas Cowboys and Atlanta Falcons, along with consecutive appearances coming up for the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I wonder if they are experimenting with having the same team in prime time for multiple weeks for if and when they ever fully embrace Tuesday and Wednesday night,”Florio said.

He acknowledged that the pattern could be random. Still, seeing several teams repeatedly occupy those standalone windows had him thinking beyond this season’s television lineup.

Why More Weekday Games Would Require ‘Surgery to the Schedule’

Florio’s theory centers on the time between games. Adding regular Tuesday and Wednesday windows would require careful planning around the dates teams play before and afterward.

“Because if you do that, the only way to make the schedule work is to have a team play Thursday one week, Wednesday the next week, Tuesday the next week,” he said.

That hypothetical sequence would put six days between each game. It would also keep the same teams moving through standalone broadcasts over successive weeks.

“You’re going to have to do this surgery to the schedule that has the same teams popping up again once you have teams playing in the middle of the week,”Florio explained.

The NFL already used a Wednesday season opener this year, with New England visiting Seattle on Sept. 9. Florio’s hypothetical would take that scheduling flexibility much further, making midweek appearances a recurring part of a team’s season.

He presented the idea as his own speculation and offered no confirmation that the NFL is conducting such an experiment.

“I don’t feel like that’s an accident,” he said of the repeated primetime stretches.

For now, Chicago fans can mark three different nights on their calendars. Florio suspects the rest of the league might eventually need to keep a few more evenings open.
