Scott Brown has revealed that he rejected an offer to manage Cheltenham Town after leaving Fleetwood.
Instead, the legendary ex-Celtic captain held off on a move before beginning his spell at Ayr United, which ended with his sacking earlier this year.
He continues to be linked with managerial roles in Scotland, including reports that he could’ve assisted Robbie Keane at Celtic — but discussing his future, he revealed that he has no immediate plans to return to management.
Instead, he is enjoying his time working in the media and watching his young children playing football.
Brown said on the Warm-Up: “We got offers before that as well, down the road at Cheltenham. We left Fleetwood, and two days later, I’d driven my stuff back up the road, and Cheltenham phoned.
“I had a wee wander around and went in. I said ‘where are we meeting?’… ‘Just come to the stadium.’ I’ve driven myself front door, walked in the stadium, had the meeting; everything was fine and literally, there and then, they’ve offered me the job.
“And by the time I’ve walked out, I’ve got about 50 messages saying ‘are you going to Cheltenham? You’re odds-on favourite.’ But I’m not really sure I want this.
“They were struggling at that point in time, they were second bottom of the league, they were 15 games into the season. They’d already admitted the money wasn’t there, they’re happy enough to go down, it would be a rebuild the next year.
“I was thinking, ‘It could be a long season, you’re probably not going to survive that if you do get relegated anyway. I’m just somebody in until it eventually does happen.’
“That was probably the one I would maybe have gone ‘you know what, give a go and see where you can take the players,’ they had some good players and a lot of young lads.”
On his time away from management, Brown continued: “I do miss the day-to-day routine. What was hard at Ayr, I was leaving early, getting back at ridiculous times. I never really saw my kids playing football.
“Even though I was off on a Sunday, I was still sitting on a laptop looking for players, looking at what we can do, then there was a game on The Tuesday and we were back in on the Sunday anyway.
“To actually see my kids play football on a Saturday and a Sunday, it’s been quite refreshing. But I definitely do miss it.
“I probably will go back in at some point in time but I’m not sure it’s going to be any time soon. For me, I enjoy watching football, I enjoy being on the pitch, I enjoy commentating on the games. As long as I’m part of something, I enjoy what I do just now.
“I was over in North Macedonia with the BBC, I’m in here talking rubbish with you and then we jump back and forth, I enjoy it, but I do miss the whole day-to-day.”
