New York Giants WR Malik Nabers was wide open on the team's final offensive play in a Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
New York Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy almost pulled off an improbable comeback on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints at MetLife Stadium, and could have, had he been more aware.
With the Saints up 34-27 and 12 seconds remaining in regulation, the Giants faced a fourth-and-1 from the New Orleans 14. McCarthy had no timeouts, so running the ball wasn't an option. He took the snap and threw the ball toward tight end Isaiah Likely, who was triple-covered, in the back of the end zone.
Incomplete. Game over.
In a typical Monday Morning Quarterback fashion, we'll tell you what McCarthy should have -- or could have -- done on that play. Throw to a wide-open Malik Nabers, who was all alone in the middle of the end zone.
It looks as if McCarthy sees him, but then looks away. He was probably waiting for the play to develop, which young quarterbacks are repeatedly trained to do. But by waiting, he gave the Saints a chance to get everyone covered.
Next time, McCarthy may simply pull the trigger and walk away a winner. Next time.
